    Slane Irish Whiskey

Slane Castle is one of Ireland’s most famous locations, known for its rich history and huge gigs featuring some of the biggest musical acts of all time, such as The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Queen, U2, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie. The site just outside Dublin is also home to a distillery, where the family of the castle’s owner Earl of Mountcharles makes Slane Irish Whiskey. This triple distilled blend of single malt and single grain whiskeys which are divided and matured in no less than three casks: virgin oak casks, seasoned casks (which previously contained Tennessee whiskey and bourbon), and oloroso sherry casks. These individual blends are then married together before being bottled, with that mellow, sweet, and approachable profile so often associated with Irish whiskey.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Sweet oak and toasted barley at first, with layers of caramel and ginger developing later on.

    Palate

Victoria Sponge Cake with plenty of jam and cream in the middle. A touch of butterscotch.

    Finish

More toasty notes linger on the finish.

A welcome change from other Irish whiskeys

The only Irish whiskeys I've had before this are Jameson, Teeling, and Bushmills (including Jameson Caskmates and Bushmills: Black Bush). This is much more like a blended Scotch, something like Jonny Walker Black Label in terms of flavour, but with a strong element of dried fruit and jam in the flavour evolution from the sherry casks. It's a very impressive whiskey, much more complex and full-bodied than I expected, and one that will work in cocktails such as the Dubliner, Emerald, Irish Old-Fashioned, or Irish Coffee, and on its own. Yum!

    Strong flavours.

I was surprised by this. Had I not known what it was beforehand I would have thought it was a Canadian Whiskey, rather than an Irish one. A curious mixture of sweetness, spice and astringency. Definitely not subtle, but nevertheless quite moreish.

    Cracking tipple @ great price.

Smooth and well rounded whiskey and extremely moreish.

    Excellent!

This is really good stuff. Just finished my first bottle and immediately ordered another two. Lovely spicy arrival and a malty, fruity, caramelly development that continues well into the finish. This is a "premium blended" whiskey I'd drink in preference to a good many single malts. At the risk of stereotyping, y'd need to be a roit eejit about whiskey to miss out on a bottle of Slane!
