A wonderfully unique Caol Ila, this was distilled in 1991 and initially aged in bourbon barrels. Jim McEwan, Bruichladdich Master Distiller, selected the cask and then transferred the whisky into Quarts de Chaume Chenin Blanc casks, and finally Château d'Yquem premier cru Sauternes casks. This was bottled at the Bruichladdich distillery in 2009, where it was reduced to bottling strength with Islay spring water. A release of 617 bottles.
Sublimely sweet and thick. Hints of light citrus and rounded notes of thick honey, malt, gingernut biscuits and a touch of Islay smoke.
Initially very sweet and nutty, white chocolate, hazelnut and tropical fruit. Then the Caol Ila notes force their way through with a gentle wave of smoke and brine.
A long, fruity finish, with hints of smoke and iodine lingering, at the same time as sweet yoghurt and peaches.
