Sazerac Straight Rye Bottling Note

The whiskey is named for the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, birthplace of the famous – and sublime – Sazerac cocktail. The Coffee House was acquired by Thomas H Handy, owner also of Peychaud’s Bitters. Originally, he sold bottles of the Sazerac cocktail, which was originally made with Cognac. Today, this glorious libation is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Sweet with spices and stem ginger in syrup. Orange zest, freshly ground black pepper and mixed peels.

Palate: Thick, spicy palate with notes of Seville orange marmalade and allspice. Peanut butter, toffee and barrel char develop later on.

Finish: An oily, spicy finish.

Sazerac Straight Rye Reviews

Top notch

Excellent on it's own, with a mixer, in a cocktail... it's just a fantastic all rounder. I'm on my second bottle

Makes a Good Sazerac

Does what it says on the bottle. Perfect for a Sazerac cocktail, which jt absolutely is. My favourite cocktail in fact. Outside of that it comes out as average. But DAMN it makes a good Sazerac.

Don’t buy it. Because I don’t want to run out....

How can anybody say anything bad about this rye? It’s just awesome!
(I’m on my third dram right now ;-) For those low raters; just keep trying. You’ll develop some real taste sooner or later....

Excellent sipping rye!

I can assure you all that this product has NOT been discontinued! Email received from Buffalo Trace indicates production is ongoing and strong as ever. I will say that it is quite difficult to find. I purchased the only two bottles my favorite retailer received and that was the first shipment since Spring of 2016! Befriend a reputable retailer, be patient and cross your fingers. I very much enjoy it neat or with a single large distilled water ice cube----pure sipping pleasure.

Great Value

Difficult to find outsuide of Louisiana but a Superior Rye whiskey in its price range. Not to be confused with the 18 yr. and Thomas H. Handy versions but nonetheless, a great rye and a great value. Though easy to enjoy neat, this is excellent in Manhattans and Sazerac cocktails! If you can find it, buy it!

i can hardly drink it

I was recommended this whiskey by a few friends. I normally drink bourbon but I normally enjoy all whiskey types and price ranges. This whiskey was almost unbearable to me. It fell flat and tasted like corn.

Old Fashions

It is the best rye whiskey I have had for old fashions.

Awesome rye , live in the land of Alberta premium , but this one stands out there with the best . I have ordered 1 more bottle . only 11 bottles left in BRITISH COLUMBIA .

At last

been through dozens of Bourbons/ryes on the hunt for the perfect rich smooth nectar..this is it. There aren't many that you could glug from the bottle "cowboy" style without a small wince.. but this is so smooth... caramel, orange spice, malt (i know its a rye!).. just a perfect whisky for the price..My favorite Buffalo Trace product ...(and i know all the Winkles)...DO NOT use as a mixer...neat or with a splash is the way

Expensive mixer

I was hoping for some trickle down of the genius that is the Jim Murray whisky of the year; which is one of the most intense taste sensations I have experienced. This is really just very disappointing- it bears no relation to that illustrious drink. Its not bad, it just really offers no reason to invest the time or the money to get to know it, Bland. Huge disappointment, and a lot of money for a cocktail ingredient.

Don't use this to make cocktails

Stunning rye whiskey, quite bowled over by it and a complete punt. Big glass, block of ice, job jobbed. Makes the families insistence on watching x-factor almost bearable, it's that good!

Just got a bottle In at The Albion Winchester

We're storming through it tonight and its outstanding people!!! Don't mix it, touch of ice at the most!

How whiskey should be done

This is a great whiskey to stock in the bar. Excellent straight or in cocktails. I wish they sold an 8 or 10 year old expression of this 6 year old whiskey, and I also think it would be great at 50% abv. That said, for a readily available whiskey, this blows away the basic whiskeys like Jim Beam.

@When can we get more to buy?

Hi there, unfortunately this is a seasonal release, and it tends to fly off the shelves! Naturally, if you can find any, do give us a tip ;) It will become available again in 2014. --The Chaps at Master of Malt

When can we get more to buy?

Everywhere is sold out of this. When will there be more?!

Not for the faint hearted

Hands down best Rye I've had, and from the states second only to Noah's Mill, this is one of the most intense, rich and borderline overwhelmingly spicy whiskies available, the fact it doesn't overpower is what makes it stand out so much. Would say, if you are dipping your toe in bourbon/rye whiskies, maybe start with something a little lighter and progress up.

Amazingly smooth

Beautiful rye, one of my favourite whiskeys, lovely and smooth and sweet with no bite that some ryes and bourbon have.

Fantastic Stuuf

We had this at one of the Manchester Whisky club tastings and I was really impressed. A supple rye yet with firm flavours including orange, ginger, lots of spice and a tickle of dark chocolate. Yum

Favourite Rye

Second only to Rittenhouse as my favourite rye bourbon, the flavour is exactly as the previous reviewer described and it definitely stands apart from other bourbons in terms of quality and flavour. Top class!

25th May 2013

Well I suppose I should review it first!

A very interesting whiskey.
I took a sip and there was very little flavour at all then !BOOM! the tip of my tongue got hit by an intensely spicy, orangey and syrupy blast, focused at the tip of the tongue. Long after the whiskey has been swallowed the spices and orange tingle on the tip of your tongue.

I definitely recommend this, never tried anything like it before!
