From the Gulliver's 47 range comes an unpeated English single malt produced at the Cotswolds Distillery, which has been matured in a shaved, toasted and re-charred ex-red wine cask (or "STR cask", if you want to use the fancy term). This style of cask (pioneered by the late, great Jim Swan) has been gaining popularity among whisky producers across the lands, and it's not hard to see why from bottlings like this. Lots of caramelised fruit and oaky spices to tuck into, making this an excellent postprandial whisky.
Honeycomb, redcurrant, orange peel, gingersnaps and barley.
Butterscotch, caramelised dates, a slow build of cinnamon and more ginger, a touch of milk chocolate.
Lingering clove and black pepper, mellowed by sultana and poached pear.

I had Gulliver's 47 Toasted and Re-charred as part of an Advent calendar. It is excellent and compares very well to not-heavily peated single malt Scotches. Damn good!
Delicious dram for the Christmas season: red fruits, honeyed, medium spice (ginger and clove). Warming, substantial, yet restrained. Enough depth to impress a serious drinker but not too complex for the casual reveler. This is the first English whisky I’ve ever sampled and it’s a cracker I must say.
