This 12 year old was distillery at the Lochnagar distillery, once visited by Queen Victoria when she was staying at nearby Balmoral.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Creamy, aromatic nose with hints of hay, malted barley, oak and mixed peels.

Palate

Soft smoke and gingerbread, oodles of toasty spices, Demerara sugar and boiled sweets.

Finish

The finish is all about grass and honey.

Overall

A sweet, summery dram…

Worth the visit

I went to the distillery whilst in Scotland, had a tipple and bought a bottle. I have just opened it after 6 months and it was worth waiting for. It is well worth the money and could form a good everyday tipple at the price. Much better than some of the industrial scale production varieties at about the same price.

I discovered Royal Lochnagar while working in Aberdeen many years ago. It has been my favorite single malt since.

No nonsense.

This is the cleanest, least pretentious single malt I think I have tried. No sherry casks, no rum undertones, no "hints of jasmine on a midsummer's morning". Just whisky, done right. I think some people won't understand this dram and mistake it for something dull or badly-made. It is not a "statement" bottle. Nothing to show off to your friends. It is an everyday dram far better than most people have in their drinks cabinet. Perhaps I am giving it more credence than it deserves. Perhaps I am missing something. But if you enjoy whisky, I think you'll enjoy this one. And I believe that by the end of the bottle you will respect what the distillers decided to do, even if you do not buy another.
