Rittenhouse Straight Rye 100 Proof Reviews

Very good Rye

A lovely tasting Rye, that just needs a little time in the glass. I decanted the Rye several times, and this (in my opinion), really opened up the Rye. There is only One thing I can moan about, and that is the very cheap plastic screw top lid, this lets it down.

Great Rye at a massive bargain

Great tasting Rye excellent for manhattans it has a great smooth peach butterscotch I can taste citrus the finish is great and it isn’t annoying. For $25 this can compare with some of the big guns. It’s hands dow. The best Rye $25 and under

spice initially on the ongue but smoothed quickly by the vanilla.. soft spices in a nice finish.

very nice rye.

soft vanilla and cinnamon custard .

...smooth for 50% in a nice lingering soft yet interesting finish. spicy on tongue initially but the soft vanilla and cinnamon takes over

very nice, interesting rye

Worth a try

Wow a great find. Had other Ryes but this is the best. A big single malt fan but this holds its own.

Best American whiskey I’ve tried!

My favourite whiskies are heavily peated Scotches, but I continue to explore. Generally I hate bourbon. Just too sweet. Same with Scotches aged in new American oak. But I quite like rye. I’ve bought a few Bottles of Wild Turkey rye lately, quite like it with coke. I usually don’t mix, but I like this combination. Saw Rittenhouse rye for the first time, and despite it being (in Australia) nearly twice the price, I gave it a go. The guy in the bottle shop said "it’ll knock your head off", but he had no idea what my favourites are (Ardbeg, Lagavoulin etc). This Rittenhouse is by far the best American whiskey I have ever tried! It is just fabulous, with a depth, complexity and lasting finish to compare with a good single malt Scotch! The Wild Turkey tastes like crap now! And no, I won’t be mixing it. (I did actually try. What a waste!). Superb!

A Rye whiskey of which you will never want to miss

This is a fantastic rye whiskey which i have ever tried. Like the after taste, strong grass and dried fruits flavour which stayed for a while. You get the punch just with the first sip and asking for more thereafter!

First class rye

Best I've tasted and excellent for an old fashioned or a Manhattan. But at $90+ a bottle in Australia, it's definitely for special occasions only. Any liquor in Australia is 3 to 4 times more expensive.

It is a good rye whiskey. Thank you :0)

This stuff is $20 in Jackson, Wy.. What can I say? It's superb. Perhaps they increase in elevation (I came from Kansas) has brought about a heightened sense of smell and taste, but nevertheless, this is really good.

6th May 2019

good staple I suppose

on my birthday i bought this bottle along with beam distillers cut 100 proof bottle. shots of both. I'd have to say rittenhouse is better more complex whiskey, but not by a long shot. the beam had an inpenetrable weird shallow woody note like balsa wood. I'll finish it though :) rittenhouse definitely defines peppery. anyway a shot or more of each knocked me on my arse and i have to effing get up and drag myself to the car dealership in the morning.. in conclusion I will be going back to WT101, neither can beat that.

Superb flavour

Compared to a typical bourbon, this easy-drinking rye is bold and flavourful. Medium sweet, rich and full-bodied, I find this a good alternative to the rather one-dimensional syrupy or overly-smoky bourbons sold at the same price. Underrated gem, try this now!

Incredible Entry-Level / Every-Day Rye

Tried to climb on the Bourbon bandwagon, only to learn that I don't care for it much. So, tried ryes, instead: Old Overholdt (ok), Canadian Club 100% Rye (dreck), Bulleit Rye (ok, again). I despaired that I'd again find out that another whiskey was not to my to-be-honest limited palate's liking...then I bought this. This gem, this nectar, this inexpensive workhorse of a libation! It's not flashy or trendy, but it stands up incredibly well neat, or with water, or on (light) rocks or in cocktails. Simply a fantastic bottle of yum.

Fantastic rye whiskey

Fantastic!! Buy it! Drink it neat, you won't regret it!

Excellent choice

My go-to Rye for old fashions and Manhattans. At 100 proof, it won't be overly diluted in a cocktail. Your price of $39 is Excessive. I pay $26 to $29 in MA, and have paid as littles as $23 in Georgia.

«With this one you can’t go wrong»

«With this one you can’t go wrong» var beskjeden innehaveren av speaialbutikken for vin og sprit ga meg.

Ol Faithful

There is nothing trendy about this whiskey. The bottle doesn’t “do” anything cool. You can’t put ten labels together and make a treasure map. It doesn’t come to the liquor store strapped to the leg of a large bird of prey. The still used to make this whiskey does not employ the use of a Flux Capacitor either. What it does do is perform as an outstanding Rye and has been doing so for years...every bottle, every glass. It’s not the most widely used Rye by bartenders for no reason my friends....

Surprise hit, absolutely love it

Highly recommend, this rye is delicious. Add it to your collection, you won’t be disappointed. Great value for money.

19th March 2018

Great value and good quality rye

I got this one because it was Ralfy-recommended. I prefer single malt Scotch, but do enjoy bourbon and rye. Not sure if I prefer rye to bourbon yet, but it's a journey. This one is well done. And at the price (here in the US) - a must have.

Whisper it, because if they hear you they'll jack up the price—this stuff is excellent. Rich, sweet, spicy, smooth, and a wonderfully wide, buttery mouthfeel for something in this price range, and frankly better than lots of stuff that costs 2-3x as much. At the very least, it absolutely beats the snot out of any of the standard mass-produced bourbons or ryes one can generally find in the UK, which again are almost always more expensive than this. It's not particularly subtle ... but it's delicious.

Rittenhouse Straight Rye 100 Proof (70cl, 50.0%)

15th November 2016

This is one of the best rye whiskies I had ever, definitely comparable to bottles 3 to 4 times as much. Stock up when you find it.

7th October 2016

Probably the best value Rye out there

In a world where getting good Rye outside of the US is becoming a major headache - this is an example that is always available and always in my cabinet. Combined with Antica Formula it's probably my top Manhattan Rye, and it's got enough depth and complexity to be drunk straight (when napped a little). Non-US markup is horrendous on all Rye's - this is available for $24+local taxes in the US, but if you aren't planning a trip to the states soon it's easily the best value available in the UK in £.

Rye Whiskey

A fine, fine rye whiskey. Smooth. Never ignore this rye whiskey

It May Not Be The Most Complex Rye- part II

"It May Not Be The Most Complex Rye"

and if they charged $80 it would become 'complex' overnight.

Makes a great 'Whiskey Cock Tail"

22nd February 2016

First Rye Whiskey for me. Beautiful stuff!

13th November 2015

It May Not Be The Most Complex Rye...

...but it is so tasty it is an extraordinary pleasure to drink. I refuse to be a snob about the fact that (in the US at least) it is a pretty cheap bottle to buy.

27th August 2015

i'm not big on rye, but this stuff plays with tongue. then so smooth and light with the finish.

25th April 2015

Rittenhouse Rye

sweet corn and pepper, lots of pepper Wuth a dash of brown sugar.

7th April 2015

Nuff Said

My absolute favourite bourbon for the price mark. Stands distinct.

9th January 2015

Bottled in Bond

This is one of the very few bonded whiskeys still produced. The flavor profile is in-your-face, with 50% ABV and all of the peppery spice one would expect from a predominately rye mash bill. Once you acquire a taste for it nothing else quite satisfies. Oh, and go ahead and mix it if you like. Makes a classic old fashioned.

13th August 2014

For the bourbon drinker on a budget, its a good Rye. Just know this goes for $25 in the states, so its not meant to be a premium spirit. I don't usually mix my whiskey, but this might do well in a Manhattan. I think a much better choice would be to spend a little more and buy the Buffalo Trace Sazerac Rye instead.

4th July 2014

Was hoping for more

This was my first try of a rye whiskey. I have to say, I was hoping for a little more. Nice sweet flavour, but not much depth to it.

18th April 2014

I bought this as a cocktail ingredient but it's good enough to drink on it's own. A dash of water calms it down and brings out more of the flavour.

4th December 2013

I found this hotter than most ryes, maybe just the 50% ABV factor. Perhaps that masked some the rye flavors I was expecting. It's a good rye, but I prefer others to it. Karl

19th September 2012

Bourbony rye

Corn syrup and sharp rye. No real complexity there. Lots of flavor, without interplay between them. You can taste corn, you can taste rye. That's it.

9th September 2012

Kentuckeys answer to Islay? not quite.........

A great whisky, sweet and spicy on the nose with vinilla, maple syrup, cloves and cinnamon, and in the mouth you get all of those flavours along with hints of green apple and the slightest suggestion of black pepper at the sides of the tongue, if you're not usually a rye whisky drinker (a catagory which I fall into) this is a great place to start, If you like BIG whiskies with demanding, powerful flavours like that of Islay malts, you'll enjoy rye whiskies, Rittenhouse rye 100 proof is a very complex yet not too overwhelming, this is a whisky that less experienced whisky drinkers will enjoy and yet has enough interesting qualities and depth that experienced drinkers will enjoy also, I will most certainly be buying another bottle of this soon and would recommend that malt drinkers should give it a try.

12th January 2012

single malt man

Single malts, mostly Islay and Highland, are my usual drams but I have been tempted recently by Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and now Rittenhouse 100%. This Rye whisky is a beauty - sweet on the nose and palate with plenty of vanilla and spice. Sip at full strength for a viscous mouth feel and glowing warmth.

a lovely sweet and firery whiskey with flavours reminiscent of maple syrup and christmas spice, tabacco and buttery leather. A wonderfully warm embrace in a glass.
