While their Bourbon, Rye and Wheat expressions are all made with 100% corn, 100% rye and 100% wheat (respectively), the folks at the Reservoir distillery are also rather accomplished at blending these spirits into fine tipples, too. This is their Hunter & Scott Bourbon, made with a combination of grains - not just one!
Melted chocolate, peach, pistachio ice cream and honeysuckle.
A slight vegetal hint as it opens, before raisin, caramel and fried banana notes take control.
Milky coffee, cinnamon and menthol.
Very strange stuff. Not quite what the colour and the label suggested. Like many other reviewers I found the nose hard to place but it certainly has a chemical aspect to it. Even after letting it breath in the glass for over an hour it really didn't taste too good. We live and we learn and I for one won't be buying another bottle.
Was featured in Garden & Gun's annual holiday gift issue, so I picked up a bottle while passing through Virginia. Bought 2 bottles. Took them on my annual bourbon and bird hunting guys trip. Opened up the bottle and took a sip. I pictured going to a Home Depot and buying a can of Behr Avenu Tan and painting a room. Then put the brush in a coffee can and fill with turpentine. Then take a sip of that. That is what this bourbon tastes like. Tan paint in turpentine. The star of that show is the graphic designer who created the nice label on the bottle.
Very good and smooth. Flavorful with a light finish. Definitely taste the milky coffee end with a hint of cinnamon.
I bought this in SC as a $29.99 throw away just because I like the label. Read the reviews after purchasing and maybe that impacted how I tasted this example. That being said, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is not an overly complex offering and at 1.5 years how can it be even in a small barrel? This makes a mean cocktail and I’ve enjoyed it as an end of day sipper if I need to unwind. With it being craft I can see where a variety of experiences can come to light but mine was all positive.
Unbelievable. Was duped into buying because it said “17” in the year “box”. Guess it went into the bottle in 2017? Nonetheless bought 2. I like supporting local distilleries but this is unlike any bourbon I’ve ever had...and not in a good way. Strange notes throughout. Just not an enjoyable experience. Not knocking the people who work hard to create and distribute this to us. I’m sure the effort is there, but you can’t rush bourbon. They rushed it. It just wasn’t enjoyable despite the hefty price tag. Would’ve been better off with Very Old Barton 100 proof at $14. Sorry to spread bad news and negative reviews but this one isn’t good....in any way.
