    Redbreast 12 Year Old

A delightful single pot still Irish whiskey, Redbreast 12 Year Old is highly praised by a host of notable critics. Distilled at the Midleton site from malted and unmalted barley, it’s then matured in a combination of American oak bourbon barrels and Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts. We can't get enough of this multi-award-winning whiskey.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Nutty, rich and oily. There are notes of dried peels, ginger, linseed and cut fruits including a touch of melon.

    Palate

Spicy with great body. Nuts and citrus (peel and juice) with hints of marzipan, dried fruits and a hint of Sherry. You turn it over in your mouth forever.

    Finish

Long and creamy with custard and spice.

    Fantastic

Varying my whiskey tasting I luckily came across this gem. Very smooth

    My first Irish pot still

Usually I stick to Scottish single malts but now and again I venture further afield to try something different - on this occasion, Redbreast 12. I read the many reviews and thought it would be a safe bet for my first pot still dram - and so it proved to be. I do enjoy a pint of a certain dark stout from the same country so I thought it would be a pleasant pairing. It was. I found all the various tasting notes available to be pretty spot-on so no point in repeating everything here but I did think it was better without any water added, probably because it's only 40% and I'm more used to Scottish malts at 46% and upwards. Still, (no pun intended) a most pleasant change.

    Is that it?

Well, I don't know what to say.. I bought this after hours of reviews. And I am fairly disapointed, but maybe I was expecting more.. thank gosh my Bunna 18 is on its way, lol. RB 12 is highly rated and considered to be one of the best 'all arounder', well.. I found JW Black to better, but perhaps my RB is coming from a bad cask. (It's a big statement for a 12 yr old whisky btw) The mouthfeel is not oily as they say, I wasn't expecting it to be either because it is chill filtered. The palate itself is not interesting either, TWE say it's full bodied with 4/5 in richness. My palate is lacking these numbers and I find harsh note in it. I just hope that I had a bad batch / bottle / cask or what ever you want to call it. Anyways, cheers from Iceland.

    Expensive quality

Yes, it's an amazingly, beautiful, gorgeous whiskey. Top quality, but for what you have to pay, it should be. Maybe you can get a bigger bang for your buck by spreading your spend elsewhere, but if it's within your easy spending budget, it's lovely.
