The team behind Rebel whiskey has shown that it enjoys using cask-finishes before (with the likes of the French Oak and Cognac Cask expressions), and now we've got another one on our hands right here! This bourbon has been given a finishing period in Tawny Port casks, introducing a generous helping of red fruit sweetness to its palate, which works very well with the creamy corn and rye spiciness at its heart.
Melted butter, raisin, flakes almonds, savoury pepper notes.
Cherry and chocolate come to the fore, with corn and caramel in the background.
Dried fruit lasts, with a dusting of nutmeg.
Expected more from this, found it a little tasteless and bland.
It's a pity this is a limited edition because the combination of this softer wheated bourbon with Tawny Port casks is quite something. Loads of wonderful red fruit notes envelop an otherwise classic bourbon profile. This is the first time I've tried a bourbon aged in something other than just charred white oak barrels. It's a worthy experience and I look forward trying more like this from the Rebel range.
