This is a previous Gordon & MacPhail bottling of Port Ellen. The Port Ellen distillery closed in 1983 and today only the maltings remain in use. This Port Ellen was bottled in 2001 and offers a rare opportunity to taste a Port Ellen younger than twenty years old.
Sherbet lemon, soft calves leather and a hint of linoleum leading to soft salty peat aromas.
Reasonably gentle with fairly prominent peat and a squeeze of lemon juice.
Long and lingering with coastal nuances and drifting wood smoke.
All the complexity you could want with a bit more bite than older bottlings.

No doubt a legendary distillery but the actual whisky was a tad disappointing, a must try for all whisky folk though!
