Port Askaig 8 Year Old Reviews

A fantastic introduction to Islay

I’m fairly new to the world of whisky, from being a kid and stealing sips of my dads Famous Grouse or a Jamesons to the teenager ordering a Jack and coke(needless to say my palate has evolved), I’ve always enjoyed the variety that whisky brings. From this I’ve explored what whisky and bourbon can offer. I’ve always found myself drawn to the Islays, there’s something about the Smokey salinity that appeals to me.
For me this is a fantastic dram full of what I expect from an Islay Whisky. On first nosing it carries a good kick of smoke and sea air. A few drops of water goes a long way in opening up this dram, bringing out the sweetness and a grassy note. On taste the smoke is relentless but balanced well with sweet citrus. A pepper spice finishes the dram and leaves me wanting to go back for more. The only point I find lacking is the longevity in the finish.
Anyway enough drivel from me. I like this whisky. Give it try for £40, I don’t think you can go wrong.

Good but not going to knock your socks off

Light, sweet, simple, peaty fairly accurate. Peppery charcoal finish.

Subtle and easy going peaty Islay

Light for a peaty one and easy to drink. Lacking in body and wholesomeness, but a reasonable Islay for the price.

Not my fav askaig, but OK for the buck.

Decent for the money

Not bad at all.

Quite nice. Has a loverly smokey flavour. Better than expected. Not sure I'd buy this over lagavulin 16 but it makes a nice change I guess. Overall nice for the value

Awesome smoky peated Islay whisky.

So people pour this down the sink when it’s won awards! Give it away to someone who likes smoky Islay whiskies!
You either like smoky whisky or you don’t. But if you don’t, why buy it and then put a review on here?
This is a top quality firecracker of a dram. I have just finished my first bottle. I will be buying another soon!

Pretty nice, light smoke, sweet and simple.

Pretty good 8. I get the nose and tasting notes listed as well as a bit of sweet kettle popcorn. Definitely get the peppery finish and peat smoke, although it’s not heavy. It’s lighter, simple and sweet and it’s pretty nice for what it is.

Young, fruity and smoky!

This is a lovely young Islay whisky with just the right balance (for my palate) of freshness and fruitiness to make it approachable
but with a smoky, darker undertone to make it interesting and a nice peppery kick on the finish. And all for around £40 a bottle, seems like excellent value to me.

Subtle, easy, enjoyable

Now I’m no expert.... but this is a little different than you’d expect, very light, lemony, a little bit oaty and ends with a bit of pepper, not too long but quite enjoyable
