Penderyn 6yo #1 TBWC Bottling Note

A whisky from way out west - Wales, to be exact! This is the first batch of Penderyn single malt whisky to be independently bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company, and it was matured for 6 years before the Boutique-y bunch got their mitts on it. The label features a technical drawing of the incredibly cool still found at the distillery, which was designed by Dr. David Faraday, a relative of legendary inventor Michael Faraday! If you look closely, you'll also see a little nod to Dr. Jim Swan, one of Penderyn's founders who had plenty of involvement in developing the distillery's house style...

‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Leafy herbs and stone fruit, with underlying malty richness.

Palate Herbaceous once again, though now with a subtle floral twist of jasmine. Juicy peaches and vanilla pod earthiness arrive soon after.

Finish Honeyed barley, greengage, white grape and cut grass.

Nice but uninspiring
light pre-meal dram, not much depth but nice floral flavour

Don’t fear the Moscatel casking here: it’s subtly present, filling nose and palate in the background yet never clearly dominating. Makes for a young, tasteful and medium complex dram, most certainly worth the £65.
Nose: Sweet dessert wine which – according to the site – is similar to PX Sherry. Not much winey notes on the nose though, rather sweet nevertheless with a good deal of heathery, floral honey, silky ripe apricots and peaches, toffee, vanilla and cinnamon. Slight waves of charred oak bring in a little ‘smoky’ effect.

Palate: Significicant rise in spices at first, glowing pepper and chili, oak spice and bit of the ABV showing as well. Ever light and sweet with many of the notes from the nose returning: vanilla, honey and silky stonefruits. More sweetening malts and for a second I even doubted about a slight corn like whiff. In balance, living up to the stated age most definitely, good choice of ABV as well, I reckon it would have been way less flavorfull at 40% …
