Dangerously good!
Simply beautiful... I was bought the tasking bottles with glass as a gift and was truly delighted with it.
This nugget of Welsh gold has a nose of candied orange and lemon slices, toasted spices, herb garden, light vanilla, and the oils of finely shredded peel. On the palate, there’s toffee and orange cake, an array of tropical fruits with papaya and passion fruit sweetness, and a good thrust of pepper and clove, leaving just a hint of grated chocolate and cask char in a dry finish.
If you like a strong but joyfully light tipple, this one's for you!

An array of tastes
I'm writing this after my first half bottle of penderyn as I wanted to taste it properly before giving my opinion. After reading reviews saying that this whisky was basically paint stripper, I approached it with a degree of trepidation, which I thankfully found to be misplaced. This whisky is smooth and the tastes present themselves one after the other well, even when drank neat, leaving an aftertaste of vanilla and coconut. The alcohol is not overwhelming, but if you do add some spring water, it becomes even smoother and doesn't lose any of the flavours. I like to combine my whisky with dark chocolate, about 85%, as I believe that the whisky is enhanced as the burn of the alcohol is lessened. This whisky combines well with a chocolate and/or spring water, but I can easily drink it neat.
My favourite whiskies are Jura and Bowmore, and now Penderyn and I look forward to discovering more penderyn whiskies. Compared to those two whiskies, this penderyn is smoother and less intense in flavour as it doesn't have that peatyness to it. For those who gave this award winning whisky a bad review, I can only believe that they are a whisky snob, who won't accept somewhere like Wales as a whisky maker, but, each to their own. Iechyd da!

An array of tastes
I'm writing this after my first half of a bottle of penderyn. After reading some reviews saying it was basically paint stripper, I had a slight feeling of trepidation, but this was misplaced. I wanted to drink at least half of the bottle before giving my opinion. The whisky is smooth and delicate even when neat, with a wide array of flavours which reveal themselves one after another with an aftertaste of vanilla or coconut. When you add spring water it is smoother still, which is not so necessary in my opinion, as the flavours remain the same. I do like to combine my whisky with dark, 85% chocolate as the taste compliments well, but this is a whisky I can easily enjoy on its own. My usual favourites are a Jura or a Bowmore, and compared to these, Penderyn Madeira Finish is much smoother but with a less intense taste. Each to their own, and enjoy

Artificially sweet
Light hay in appearance, there's a strong nose on this one. It's extremely grassy and herbal with a bready, yeasty note. It is very odd, and frankly a little off putting. Underneath that strong herbal tone is a slight sweetness, like barley sugar sweet, not toffee sweet.
In the mouth it's over sweet, almost chemically sweet, there's some ginger heat, it's a little custardy but not in a nice way. It tastes like really cheap sugar free custard, the sort you only buy by accident once.
The finish is thankfully short, it just leaves a slightly bitter ginger taste, along with that artificial sweetness. Absolutely horrible stuff.

Will be offering to guests to try and not buying another bottle when done.
Not for fans of traditional single malts. The sweetness takes over and is borderline artificial, other comments that suggest a cheapness almost chemical tone to the smell and taste are not to far off the mark.
