Penderyn Celt (41%)

A 2015 addition to the Penderyn range of Welsh single malt whiskies! This is the Penderyn Celt, which enjoys a finishing period in peated casks, resulting in a subtle, elegant wisp of smoky peat coming through...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Vanilla and orange zest blend well, with touches of coast peat wafting in. The peat grows more intense on the palate, with a little bit of a medicinal edge to it.

I've been really good, can I have

Devoid of character.
Didn't enjoy this at all. It seemed to be totally devoid of character. Wouldn't buy it again, ever!!!

Impressive well worth a try
Very impressed. Smooth well balanced throughout, mellow notes of peat and a touch of smoke, A smooth, slightly sweet finish. Highly recommend trying this.

Good, fresh taste! Slight bitterness towards the end, great after taste!

Loved it
My brother bought a bottle for me for my 50th birthday today. I have just cracked it open after a few 'looseness' and I like it, a lot. It does remind me of an Islay Malt. I normally prefer a Speyside non-peaty style, but this is very subtle, and I would love it to be my normal everyday whisky. It's the Bollocks!

More bitter than Peat
I have tried a few of the Penderyn range and in my view they all have a very similar background taste. One reviewer described it as banana but I can not place it. Unfortunately it is not for me. I struggled to taste any peat flavour coming through and am not keen on the background taste as it is quite bitter.

Drinks like a mild Islay
This is the best Penderyn I've tasted so far. It's like a milder Islay, subtle peat, smoke and iodine. I prefer a sledgehammer of peat and smoke personally but this is not one to be passed over.

Even with my native Welsh Dragon on the bottle, I would not want to pay much more than £20 for this, so £36+ is pushing it.

Trademark banana and peat
A rather unholy marriage of the typical fruity banana undertones from Penderyn with some peat added. It's a bit contrived maybe rather than entirely natural but it works to a degree. It's not my go to favourite, but it's a pleasant every day slurp. Worth having when on offer from around £25.

Pleasantly surprised
I didn't really know what to expect from a Welsh Whisky, but this was a welcomed addition to the cabinet.
I've read it's matured in ex Lophroaig casks, and you can certainly get a light touch of peat.

As a big fan of Islay whiskeys, this isn't too dissimilar to Jura superstition, not smokey enough (for me) to make me want to buy it a few times a year, but certainly one I wouldn't turn down. It's a good solid single malt that can most certainly hold its own against some of the Scotch stalwarts.
