Paul John in Goa has created a pair of Indian single malt whiskies finished in different types of sherry casks for its Select Cask series. This particular edition was allowed a finishing period in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, imparting some big, bold, lip-smacking notes of chocolate, dried fruit and coffee.
If Oloroso sherry is more your thing, then you're in luck - Paul John Oloroso Select Cask is here!
Marmalade on toast, mocha, stewed plums and a kick of peppercorn.
Espresso, raisins, sultanas, apricot, chocolate mousse and perhaps a touch of mint chocolate too.
Lasting festive spices and chocolate peanuts.
Miniature in advent calendar. Speyside-y whisky, faint tang of vinegar like bourbon, not unpleasant.
Smooth & balanced. Nose a bit underwhelming but more than make up for it with a good mouthfill and very nice impact when swallowing. Not so sweet as I was expecting. Imo about as sweet as Bunnahabhain 12 and less sweet than Ardbeg Uigeadail, for comparison.
My wife bought me a miniature of this to try. It was sweet...very sweet, but there was also a warming spiciness coming through on the finish. At 48% it takes a few drops of water too which smooths out the edges beautifully.
