Old Rip Van Winkle is a world-renowned bourbon maker whose whiskies have won several awards over the years. This is the 10 year old expression.
Thick caramel with strong vanilla and pepper spice. There are some cherries here too, an almost maraschino-like note.
The spice continues here on the palate with cloves and nutmeg added to the pepper we got on the nose. There are heavy bitter orange notes too with more of that maraschino cherry.
Medium finish with the spicy rye taking the lead.
This is a tasty and involving bourbon that displays a strong vanilla character after its ten years in oak.
This is a very good bourbon but grossly over rated. It's mythical status supersedes what it really is.
Derek provided me with a bottle and said to nurse it. The first visit was rough and hot, but after 6 months the floral/blossom nose is a real treat. After a year, half a bottle remains and the orangey nutmeg comes through smoothly. It is a keeper, just ask Derek
This is a wheated bourbon I actually enjoyed. So far, the only bourbons I liked had rye and the spices rye gives, but Buffalo Trace says this is a wheat recipe bourbon (but they don't say there is no rye). There are some spice flavors here, perhaps accentuated by the slightly higher alcohol content. I prefer Scotch, but I'd rate this my favorite among the bourbons I've tried, displacing Knob Creek. Karl
