A 50% abv bottling of this popular and old bourbon brand. Willie Soke would approve. Old Grand-Dad is also the brand specified by Bond in Live and Let Die (the novel) for his Old Fashioned in 1954, but that isn't not why this bourbon is "bonded", of course. It was bottled in bond, meaning it has been aged and bottled according to certain US regulations including the fact that it's from one distillery, has been aged for at least 4 years and was bottled at 100 proof.
Nose: Robust with corn, vanilla and spicy rye as well as floral notes and minty hints.
Palate: Malty caramels, spices, especially clove, and a touch of oak.
Finish: Spicy, fruity rye and hot leather.
Overall: A concentrated version of an American favourite.

I have found it to be a smooth and ,mellow whiskey with very little bite. Mixed with coke cola you can sip most of the night with out getting a headache in the morning. The one I prefer is the 86 proof. I don't know what all the extra rye does but don't change a thing.

It's a Goldilocks bourbon. Not too sweet and not too spicy. It's just right for a sip, a cocktail or a coke. A very good bourbon.

The old bottling with an orange coloured screw cap is superb. Very complex, spice and depth and a very dry long finish. The new nottling with a plastic stopper is much sweeter, an aftertaste of toffee and caramel, which I find ghastly. And the touch of slime on the nose and on the palate from the softening agents in the plastic stopper ...... either 4 1/2 stars or O

It's strong and old as time. I'm not going to sit here and dissect this bottle of whiskey as if it were a Jackson Pollack painting.
