    Old Forester Bourbon

Old Forester Bourbon was the first to be sold in America in sealed glass bottles, to avoid any unsavoury folks tampering with their carefully-considered recipe. It was first seen on shelves back in 1870, and the rye-rich bourbon continues to be enjoyed today.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Top notes of orange blossom and cedar. Soon develops the classic rye bread warmth and a lingering waft of buttered pancakes.

    Palate

Starts quite sweet with caramel and maple syrup, though swiftly develops intense oak-y elements and hints of pine resin. Sweetness returns slightly on the mid-palate.

    Finish

Juicy orange and spicy oak continue on the finish.

    Overall

Bourbon doesn't get made for over 140 years without it being pretty great, so it's unsurprising that Old Forester is, well, pretty darn great!

    Harsh and chemical

More like battery acid than bourbon. The nose and palate is very much dominated by a harsh chemical smell and taste. Really wasn’t for me but each to their own.

Old style bourbon with a bit of a kick

Approached this with an open mind based on the divided reviews and was pleasantly surprised. Confused by the comments saying it was too sweet, I tried it neat, back to back with Wild Turkey 101 (which it reminds me of) and 101 is definitely sweeter, no contest. Then I tried Old Forester with a little ice and it opened up and became noticeably sweeter and smoother but a lot of character was lost, whereas WT101 on ice pretty much stayed the same. So maybe that's the issue. Don't water it down! It's not as good as WT101 but it was cheaper and at £25 or thereabouts it's good value for money if you like your whiskey old style with a bit of a kick.

Very nice straight, cheap enough to mix

Not quite as fragrant, sweet, or complex as Elijah Craig Small Batch for example, but a very nice richly satisfying bourbon. I use this mostly for mixing since I’ve got other more expensive choices, but it’s very nice straight as well. For the price, it’s amazing!! For just a few $ less you get truly awful bourbon, you have to spend another $10 to do much better.

    Grim

Far too sweet and all around unpleasant bourbon.
