    Single Malt

    Old Ballantruan 'The Peated Malt'

A heavily peated malt for a Speyside distillery, bottled at higher proof, Old Ballantruan is an unusually peated single malt from the Tomintoul distillery.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

The nose is full and rich. There are notes of vanilla fudge and chewy toffee with shades of dried herbs and crème de cacao. There are notes of gentle peat and creosote with a touch of menthol and notes of malt extract. The palate is full and punchy. There are notes of barley sugar and toasted cereals, a cardboard note with hints of vanilla fudge and notes of chewy dark peat. There are tones of lemon marmalade and herbs. The finish is long and smooth with notes of soft wood smoke and barley sugar enriched peat.

    Not up to scratch

Not to bad a malt but would not buy again as it leaves a funny aftertaste on the palate.

Belongs in a much lower price range.

So, with an open and eager heart, we opened this bottle on one of our late Friday afternoon tasting sessions. The sting of a young single malt was immediately apparent. Forgivable, some can pull it off, right? We went against Jim Murray on this one and added some water to lighten it up, disperse and diffuse the intensity a bit. Did a bit to open it, but still, the next problem did not disappear. The early taste is alright, clearly a Speyside with an infusion of (or at least a nod to) an Islay bent. But within microseconds, the taste morphs into an almost plastic-like hold. The aftertaste carries on this decidedly unpleasant taste for the remainder of the nip. The most critical of the group said nailpolish and diapers. Final verdict on our end - worth knowing about, there is effort in this, but not a repeat purchase. Belongs in a much lower price range.

    A shocker

I got a sample of this. It’s not often I have to pour a whisky down the sink. There are so many whiskies that are better at this price point.

    Wow

Very surprising to get such a complex peaty flavour like this from a speyside whisky, if you like port askaig or ardbeg you will love this. Top value for money

    Top Shelve Peaty dram

Islay beware; you can take the high road but I'm taking the low road to Speyside!!!
