    Oban 14 Year Old

A bustling seaside resort has grown up around the distillery in the two centuries since it was first built in the fishing town of Oban. The West Highland malt is still produced in the same unhurried, traditional fashion and this 14 year old is a classic whisky from the distillery.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Smoky, maritime nose with hints of sticking plasters and toffee brittle.

    Palate

Smoky, creamy palate with notes of marmalade, toffee apples and pear cider. A development of cloves comes late palate.

    Finish

A long, malty finish with toasty oak and spice.

    Overall

A true classic, Oban's 14 year old is a great coastal dram for lovers of lightly smoked, fresh malts.

    From De Bruyne to Greilish

In 2021 this was priced at £38 and remained at reasonable price till 2022 when all hell broke lose. This is still 1 of my favourites and at once upon a time it was fine like De Bruyne, now it's overpriced like Jack Greilish!

    Overpriced classic

Unbelievable to see the price rocket in recent years. This is a nice whisky but there are many alternatives at a third or even half the price that are as good.

Best viewed through a rose tinted speculum.

I sampled this as part of a pack, and have had it a couple of times in bars. Inoffensive and smooth, not improved with a drop of water, but some pleasant notes of malt and bitter orange. To my surprise, I actually preferred the Aberfeldy 12 from the pack, but would reach for Clynelish 14 over this. The price irritates me. I have paid more than this for a bottle, but I would not pay £71.95 for Oban 14. A classic, you say? I say you can find much more interesting drams, or even smoother and tastier drams, for much less than you now pay for this. Someone below said "a smoother, sweeter, Highland Park", and I agree. I also prefer Highland Park

Expensive for what it is, but that's a lot

It's a fantastic bottle of scotch. You won't be disappointed unless your standards are far too high for a bottle under £50. It's not overwhelmingly sweet like some bourbons, nor is it aggressive or harsh. It's a word that people who think they know a lot about whisky hate, but it's smooth. It's a fantastic gift to get someone who doesn't drink whisky but wants to. There is always a bottle on my shelf, for guests, or for when I'm a bit blown out for a big Islay.
