This is a grain whisky from the North of Scotland distillery bottled for Douglas Laing's Clan Denny range. Grain whisky is made from un-malted grain and is distilled in a column still. The result is a cheaper (and sweeter)style of whisky which is most often used for blending. However, grain whiskies can be extraordinary when aged for long periods of time.
Sweet notes of caramel and winter spice son the nose lead to a Bourbon-like palate of toffee and cinnamon. The finish is immensely long thanks to the time spent in cask and is vanilla-centred with a little nutmeg.
Some say it's the cheap version of scotch because it's unmalted grain. Smooth, wonderful aftertaste. Not harsh. It needs the age to make it extraordinary, and it is.
