While most distilleries use their Coffey stills only to make grain whisky, Nikka use the two Coffey stills at their Miyagikyo distillery to create malt whisky too. The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky was introduced to their selection of expressions in 2014. Plenty rich and flavoursome, it's a wonderful addition to Nikka's fantastic range.

This is a fantastic Whisky! Its amazing how many of the reviewers show their total ignorance when reviewing this whisky, ie: 'Coffee taste becomes more prominent when sipping...'. It is not a coffee flavored whisky, it doesn't taste like and isn't suppose to taste like coffee. Perhaps, because its Nikka COFFEY Grain Whisky they believe it's suppose to taste like coffee. It's made from corn and there is no coffee involved in it's production. The word Coffey is referring to the still that is used to produce it, still patented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830. So stop trying to sound like pretentious twits and just enjoy one of the best sipping whiskies there is.
Not sure what is going on, is it the barrel variation or is it my taste but this is far from enjoyable especially at that price. Very little nose, raw alcohol, a bit of barrel smokiness, not a quality bourbon like but rather fresh wood one. Some after taste with a coffee and overpowering sweetness but nothing to make this interesting. Even coffee taste is more like pale cheap one and not like Brazilian one with full of life and character. After alcohol wears off ,strange as this is 45% , bitter coffee is still on the palette and I really cannot feel anything more but sweetness , maybe a hint of vanilla and citrus ,some orange¿. Very disappointed as Nikki black was quite enjoyable experience. Adding few drops of water helps taming the alcohol harsh sent. Coffee taste becomes more prominent when sipping, still alcohol on the palette . Still unpleasant after taste and this time sweetness stays longer.
Uber smooth. A cross between a single malt and a bourbon. Notes of chocolate, caramel, and espresso. Seems like the issue with the Nikka NAS single malts that replaced the age statements is so many people loved the age statements and have not compared 10/12/15/20 yr olds to NAS in blind tastings, seeing how many people like the coffey malt, coffey grain, and nikka from the barrel.
