    Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky

While most distilleries use their Coffey stills only to make grain whisky, Nikka use the two Coffey stills at their Miyagikyo distillery to create malt whisky too. The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky was introduced to their selection of expressions in 2014. Plenty rich and flavoursome, it's a wonderful addition to Nikka's fantastic range.

Put me off Japanese whisky for now

Like a mix of cheap whisky, 'expensive' vodka and a small splash of pear-flavoured alco-pop. Little to smell except alcohol and quite a bad aftertaste. I'd drink it again but I wouldn't pay for it. I'm not averse to Japanese whisky but was last really into them about 9 years ago, when Hibiki 21 went for £65 and Yamazaki 18 for £50. At the time those were different and interesting whiskys, especially the Hibiki 21. Not necessarily better than a Scottish whisky but high quality with lots in there to enjoy. This coffey malt is just weird and simplistic. For something that's different and also excellent I have recently tried and would recommend Amrut cask strength peated; that is something. Maybe that will be £500 a bottle in 10 years too.

    Nice experience!

I notice pear, lime and vanilla on the nose, very refreshing. The palate is spicy at first, then it turns to full of flavors, fruity and woody. You can still feel a little bit spicy and salty on the tongue for a rounded finish.

Bourbon Nose, Fruity & Zesty Palate

I must say I was intrigued by this dram of how it transitions and shows you different notes throughout the tasting. The nose has a full toffee and vanilla tone just like a Bourbon would have, even though this is malt and not maize. So I expected a similar experience. Now to my surprise the palate gives you something completely different! A sensation of fresh fruits, almost on the Orange side with citrus peals that gives a tart feel on the tongue. Very fesh and light. On the finish you still have a light feel with a moment of fruitiness which then transitions towards dark chocolate, hazelnuts and some oak. A bottle worthy of the shelf!

    Just PERFECT... Almost

Oh dear God... This is an amazing whisky, it is simple as that. The nose is fruity and elegant, punchy. Than you've got this perfectly sweet and fruity attack, with some apple and lemon mixed together in a kind of oily and buttery sirup. Finish is dry with some lime and ginger, no bitterness, warm. Just a bit too short. But still, I love it and look forwardé sharing it with friends!

Wonder what this would be like in 12 years?

Got some orange and meyer lemon notes from this one. Alcohol burn dissipates quickly and you're left with a long lingering sugar coating on your tongue. Liked it as i drank it, but finding the lingering sweetness to be a bit much.
