Pure Malt Red is a Japanese blended malt in a charming looking bottle! This is made up of malt whisky from the Nikka distilleries Yoichi and Miyagikyo. The result is a fruit, creamy, buttery, and slightly herbal whisky.

Of the Pure Malt range, the Red being the most floral and fruity, the white being peated and the black being somewhere between the two. Since Jim Murray’s review, the black shit up to £100 a bottle and has since disappeared. The Red however is still very much attainable and is quintessentially Japanese in its flavour profile. A tremendous effort and for £40/bottle it’s underpriced and quite frankly, underrated.

Very neutral drink. Not unpleasant but would not go out of my way to get it again.
A Good well balanced whisky. nose is fresh and fruity; a little water opens the oranges and smooths further. a lovely finish, with more orange peel. i prefer this to "by the barrel" by a distance. not cheap for a 50cl bottle but i must say this is the first japanese whisky i really like(with the water especially) struth
Very nice experience. A nice start to the Japanese whisky adventure.
