Ragtime Bottled in Bond

New York Distilling Company launched this bottled in bond edition of its flagship Ragtime Rye in April 2019, which features a 75% rye, 13% corn and 12% malted barley mash bill and qualifies for the Empire Rye designation as all of the rye grain comes from New York state. It was matured for a minimum of four years and bottled at 50% ABV. Do your Old Fashioned cocktails need an upgrade? This'll be exactly what you're looking for.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Red cola cubes, dark fruits and maple syrup, with a hint of white pepper and tart cherries.

Palate Cinnamon and nutmeg prickles through astringent oak, leather and jammy berries, as well as a touch of vanilla.

Finish A little drying, with lemon peel and eucalyptus.

Reviews for Ragtime Rye Whiskey Bottled in Bond
Beautiful.
One of my absolute favourite Rye Whiskeys. Incredibly smooth, packed with flavour, loads of character. Love it.

Disappointing
I'll start by saying I'm an advocate of the standard Ragtime Rye, it's delicious (I also love thier Dorothy Parker Gin) and I prefer the higher proof Rye Whiskeys (Pikesville 110 proof being my go to) so when this Bottled in Bond came up on offer I jumped at the chance.

I'm sad to say its a disappointment. The strength shines through in harsh acidity and astringency. Yes, it's sweet with red liquorice and has hints of cinnamon, but this bottle feels likes it's higher proof for the sake of being higher proof. None of the flavours have any opportunity to develop due to the astringent alcohol and the drink becomes uncomplex and, well, too strong.

I'll try some more throughout the next week to see if it changes my mind.
