The first release in Nc'nean's Quiet Rebels series (which is a very cool name, by the way) has arrived! The series is all about the people who make Nc'nean what it is, and who better for the first release to be named after than the founder of the distillery, Annabel! Her mission was to build a distillery that could lead the way in terms of sustainability and innovation, and we'd say that Nc'nean definitely fits that description. The whisky itself is an intriguing single malt that shows off some of the distillery's early flavour experiments, having been made with a combination of whisky aged in ex-bourbon and ex-Tokaji wine casks!
Cherry Bakewells, honeycomb, and a flash of papaya.
Fragrant vanilla, with a floral touch to it, balanced by barley sugar, coconut, and ginger.
Softly fruity on the finish, plus hints of vanilla remain.
A deep, rich flavour that starts with wood and marzipan, moves through sweet red fruits and ends with a fiery note (from that 48% strength?). Plenty of character, but for me, this is not really a crowd-pleaser.
