Gordon & MacPhail
Scotland
Single Malt
An old school bottle of 15-year-old single malt from Mortlach, aged in first fill and refill sherry casks before it was independently released by Gordon and MacPhail.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Admittedly there is often a bit of a sulphur problem on the nose that somewhat stunts the enjoyability - but a tiny drop of water really helps dispel it. The palate is gorgeous with buttered bread, ginger, and fruit salad. This is a great everyday single malt that I'm always up for and well-priced. Only drawback is the sulphur but it's a mild flaw not a deal-breaker in my opinion.
Really lovely rich malty palate. Very nice oak on nose and finish.
The nose smells of spent fireworks and sulphur, almost like heated snot. If you like sulphur notes in a sherried whisky, then this is perfect. If not, do not buy.
Was really looking forward to tasting this one, but found myself unimpressed and disapointed. The nose is not particularly pleasant, has an unpleasant off note about it, almost fishy like smell in the background. Taste and development improves the initial impression somewhat, but this dram does not do the business for me at all. Thin arrival, little happening before going leathery and fishy (again) on the finish. It's better than it sounds, but still far from a good whisky. It could be that got a bad bottle, but I'm still left with a poor impression this bottling/version of Mortlach and will not be buying any more of it. Thumbs down from me on this one.
I want to get used to this as I think the Mortlach 16 is among the finest, but the christmas spices are a bit too overwhelming for my taste in this one. The Masters of Malt notes are indeed spot on, I highly recommend if that's your thing.
