A mighty Mortlach single malt from Diageo's 2021 Special Releases! This expression from the distillery affectionately known as the Beast of Dufftown is a 13 year old whisky, matured in a combination of virgin and refill American oak casks, resulting in a particularly powerful flavour profile. The theme for 2021's Special Releases is Legends Untold, inspired stories real and imagined around each distillery, and this one features a howling wolf on its label. Wolves are great.

Excellent whisky
If you're looking for the Mortlach spirit slathered up in (first fill) sherry cask influence, this bottling is not for you. If you're interested in checking out the Mortlach distillate, framed respectfully with minimal but complementary cask support, you might want to give this one a try. I find this an excellent example of the Mortlach spirit. To be honest, I'd expected more of a contribution from the highly charred virgin oak, but that's not the case. The influence from the virgin oak and refill bourbon casks is beautifully modest, perhaps mostly contributing vanilla. Otherwise, the characteristic creaminess, orange, lemon, and ginger spiceness that I associate with the Mortlach distillate is front and center. Personally, I find this to be an absolutely delightful dram, light, bright, sweet, and spicy.
