Toasty malt, candied almonds, and frangipane are joined by hints of cherries and wild strawberries. Earthy vanilla develops in time, through rich old oak and thick, runny toffee.
Superbly soft for the start, with grilled peach, fresh apricot, and citrus blossom. Toasted almonds and Madeira cake soon arrive, with oily, nutty barley and drizzles of honey in tow.
Roasted coffee and a crackle of pepper join a whisper of smoke way off in the distance, while earthy maple syrup keeps things sweet.
After 42 years in the barrel, it’s worth giving this the extra hour or so in the glass to open up. Patience is king. You’ll be rewarded with a wealth of rich, deep flavours, old fashioned and regal. They say it all begins in your 40s. Here’s proof.
