Mackmyra Expedition
This latest release from Sweden's Mackmyra distillery is a bit unusual. It was aged in a mixture of American and Swedish oak. Not so strange there. But then some of it was finished in casks that previously held Swedish cloudberry wine. For those who don't know, a cloudberry is a fruit that grows in northern climes and is known in England as a knotberry or knoutberry. They grow wild in Sweden and are highly prized for making wine out of, and the used casks for aging whisky in. Makes a nice change from sherry.
Tasting Note by The Producer
Nose
Spicy and smoky with a complex palette of vanilla, fruits and berries. A combination of cloudberries, spicy Swedish oak, juniper smoke and peat.
Palate
Fruity and spicy with juniper, caramel fudge, cloudberries, and dried fruits.
Finish
Spicy and slightly smoky with an elegant fruitiness and notes of liquorice.
