Lot 40 Rye Whisky Bottling Note

Lot 40 Rye is a legendary Canadian rye whisky that is produced in a single copper pot still. At some point during the 2000s, Lot 40 Rye was discontinued, which caused quite a stir among whisky enthusiasts who considered it to be one of the best Canadian whiskies out there. Luckily, this delicious drop has been relaunched - so fill your boots!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Earthy rye kicks in right away, backed up by caramel, fig and flamed orange peel.

Palate: Softly floral as it opens, leading into cardamom pod and peppery coriander. Crunchy brown sugar and fresh vanilla pod sweetness.

Finish: Classic rye spiciness lingers.

Lot 40 Rye Whisky Reviews

Not one for me

Bought this hoping I could save a few quid on the Rye for my Manhattans but it's a bit harsh so will go back to spending twice the money for a much nicer drink

5 star rye. Very refreshing and mouthwatering.

My first Canadian rye, but not the first of rye. A forest distilled, fresh spicy wood all around. There is some sweetness on the nose and at the arrival, but it is quickly taken over by endless evergreen forest sap, spice. I immediately think of mountains and forests sipping on it.
Not a single "bourbon" note in it, maybe apart of vanilla pod note in the empty glass.
I hope it represents the Canadian rye style, amazing stuff.

stonking whiskey

great to see it back.. as good as ever, and may just be a bit better.. plenty vanilla, and a pepper finish... honey and vanilla inbetween.
One of the best ryes around still and certainly the best value.

Good drink!!!

Hello People from Lot 40 :

I think whatever alchemy you’ve concocted to produce the penultimate Canadian whiskey is your day of glory! I have been drinking whiskey for fifty years and you guys have nailed it! Merry Christmas and cheers for the New Year!’

Must try to discover rye

Frustrates me that this website don't display Canadian whiskies more prominently; people are missing out as a result! This is one of my favourites. Tried it on a trip to Toronto once and have never gone back.

Apple, pepper, a long spicy finish. Rye is the perfect winter warmer and this is one of the best.

A perfect rye

Everything a Canadian rye SHOULD be. Strong and hearty yet hints of sweetness, just like the people of the country it is made in.

100% Canadian Rye, absolute belter.

Very enjoyable whisky, definitely my go to North American. For those unfamiliar with 100% rye, it has a big spicy flavor that stays with you for quite some time. Amazing value for money.

Use as a mix only, no complexity, no identity, disappointed.

Just bought a bottle at the LCBO. I’m disappointed, it has no complexity, no identity and is only good for mixing. Won’t buy it again.

Better than Dickel Rye and Rittenhouse (and I like those)

Unmistakably RYE and full bodied. Definitely pumpernickel and european rye bread aroma/flavor to it. Red apple (and apple seeds).

I have 2 bottles of this. The "current" green label one that says "made with pot still rye" - that's the one I'm reviewing. And a yellow label (without 2012 on it) that says "made with malted rye" - I haven't tried it yet. From what I gather this is AFTER the 2012 edition but before the switch to 100% unmalted rye. I wonder how collectible these are :)

Hyper aromatic

This is intense from the off. Low ABV but massive amounts of flavour. Hot nose. I get pine, spice and zest. It packs a huge range of spice. Hard for me to convert to the page. Clove / cardamom / pepper. Some background sweetness. Lots going on. Complex. In two words: hyper aromatic. If this was £60+ people would be waxing lyrical about it. Snap up two plus before gen. pop. cottons on how good this is. It is interesting but not in a novel / forgettable away.

Varietial Showcase

Far too much heat for my palate, frankly, but if you can get past it there is lovely pomme-fruit, christmas-spice, vanilla and pumpernickel character throughout. The grain's impact is definitely present all the way through. I would describe the grain intensity as similar to Irish Whisky - there, but lighter and less oily than a Scottish spirit.

Let the glass breath for a bit and some of the harshness dissipates. Would really like to see this style just done in basic pots and aged for even longer.

Cambridge Whisky Nut Says:

One of the finest Canadian Ryes I've come across. Very punchy, sweet then tangy. Complex mix of sweet and spice. 43% ABV is also welcome as it carries a lot more flavour. MasterofMalt notes are bang on.
