The third release in Lot 40's Cask Strength series. This time, a portion of the fantastic Canadian rye whiskey has enjoyed a finishing period in new French oak barrels, and it has been bottled up at a burly 57% ABV. Ought to be very impressive indeed, we reckon.
Cinnamon, sawdust, vanilla blossom and toffee popcorn.
Raspberries and blueberries, balanced by peppercorn and caraway heat. Subtly grassy at points, with a layer of orange zest.
Dusty oak, more peppercorn, a touch of sugary coffee.
Just sipping this after it arrived this morning along with my seaweed and aeons cask strength (its next...) I am a huge fan of the standard Lot 40, though I probably use it in old fashioned more than neat. This packs a punch on the finish. I'm smiling as my gums tingle. This is one tasty bottle, and I mean the contents, not the slinky design. It truly is fabulous. On the nose, smells great - agree with toffee. Tingled my nostrils too.... On the chew... gums having a party and the totally agree with the caraway. The finish? Well... you want to do it again.... but keeping my eye on the strength. One large one will do tonight. Will add a dash of water to the last couple sips and see what affect that has..... A definite 9/10
Wasn't fortunate enough to try the 12 yo & 11 yo, and heard this wasn't as good. Presumably how some stock got to the UK as didn't sell out in Canada. I will tell you though, and I love american ryes, this beats any american rye I have had. On the nose it's fruity with molasses with no hint of rye. To taste full of flavour with a unique but distinctive rye. Almost has a liqueur feel to it. Pure silky syrup. No idea of the age, but I would have happily paid double for this. £64 is a great price for an imported product. Buy, buy, buy. Only chance to buy in the UK. Colin G
