High Commissioner Bottling Note

High Commissioner is a blend of various malt and grain whiskies. It's actually not that bad, with a pretty decent balance of flavour.

High Commissioner Reviews

More than decent at the price

This is a good, solid blend. More than decent at the price. Buy without fear and enjoy a dram.

22nd October 2020

Pleasantly surprised

During lockdown this was the only whisky I could get in the weekly online shop, I was not expecting much but it was either this or nothing.I am not usually a blended whisky drinker but this is excellent.

20th October 2020

A Good cheap standard

I came here just the reviews, but I thought I put one up myself,

As a whiskey, I love it, I'd definitely prefer a top end whiskey, like Laphroig, Auchentoshen, or Powers and Bushmills, but High Commissioner is incredibly pleasant tasting for the price, £8.29 for a 35cl bottle where I live, so if ever you need your whisky kick, I'd endorse this whisky

20th October 2020

Saves the day when the nearest main stream supermarket is 13 miles away!

Excellent warm tones with a real impact on the pallet. Far more depth than any blends I have tried recently, including Margot from Lidl which is my fall back blend. At under £15 a bottle from my local convenience store in North Devon, it was one of the nicer surprise in moving here. Try it with a splash of water as many Scots drink whisky, you won't be sorry.

13th September 2020

The best cheapest whisky?

With the minimum unit pricing in Wales you can't buy whisky for less than £14.00 for a (70cl) bottle so this is entry level. There are a lot of horrible whiskies around at £14.00

I used to be a bit of a single malt snob but I've come to appreciate that a good blend can be better than a mediocre or poor single malt. I stumbled across this in my local newsagents. For the price this is smooth and very drinkable, nothing to dislike here, a farmhouse fruitcake in a bottle.

Is this the best cheapest whisky around?

18th August 2020

Very good

Just as enjoyable as many higher priced ones. Used to buy it regularly from a local supermarket but it disappeared from their shelves a couple of years ago. Would like to find a local stockist.

15th August 2020

Very good

One of the BEST of it's type. Easy drinking with a well balanced flavour of caramel and malt with a hint of apple.

7th August 2020

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Used to be the cheap "doubles bar" whisky in my local. I prefer it to any of the other blended whiskies and half the malts!

3rd July 2020

Cheap and cheerful

Cant fault it at all. Worth every penny of the £14.49 price tag. Drink with a nice lager as a whisky chaser!

20th June 2020

I'd rather have beer!

I had the bottle for a time now, and decided to give it a try; I didn't like it at all! You get a strong alcohol-taste and smell, and it literally burns while it reaches your stomach. I agree it is cheaper than rivals, but I'd rather drink beer than this "whisky".

19th May 2020

Cheap and cheerful budget friendly but actually very quaffable - just wish they didn’t use caramel colouring but other than that a bargain

19th May 2020

A pleasant surprise!

Bought a bottle in my corner shop for £14, not without some trepidation. I was very pleasantly surprised! For a blend, it's up there with the household names. I will definitely be getting more.

18th May 2020

As I love whisky and never tryed this as I like the single malt verity. Got a bottle of high commissioner for my 40th birthday I'm now 56 and popped it open tonight. Can't believe what I was tasting. Purely heaven. Probley get slated for this but it's as smooth as Johnny walker blue label for a blended whisky. The price difference is huge. If I had to judge the two. I'd have to give jhonnie walker blue 12 out of 10. High commissioner 10 out of 10. Will be buying this from now on

22nd April 2020

Whisky with history

High Commissioner has pedigree and longevity. It was a leading brand when we fought the SWA to allow it to be sold at less than 40 percent abv. Tasted good then, tastes great now.

4th March 2020

Warm praise (after the second one)

off their company website (
"A blend selected from our finest grain and malt whiskies, High
Commissoner has flavours of soft fruits, peach, pear and chewy caramel.
Sweet and fruity with notes of malted barley, overlaid with a touch of peat.
Well balanced and complex with a long smooth warming finish."
They do a 7 yr old too.

19th February 2020

Not that easy to get hold of,came across it at a corner shop whilst visiting relatives, exceptional whiskey, especially for the price, smooth ,mellow and no nasty aftertaste. In short we’ll recommended .👍🥃

15th February 2020

Great Value Quality Blend and Tastes Great.

Have bought this smooth blend more recently as I have found it to be of better quality and taste than some more well know blended brands. No nasty after taste like some.£14 at my local corner shop it is a steal for that.I think it has a higher malt content from my tasting and a hint of smoke to Me.Should be advertised more and available in larger supermarkets as it deserves it.I can see why it won a Silver award. Will keep returning to it if still available at my local shop.Cheers.

29th January 2020

Good value.

Bought it with trepidation as there was nothing on the bottle to tell me what the blend was. Needn't have worried - great taste for the price.
As for the guy who dubbed it "odious liquid" l note that he "coiffed" it! If he'd quaffed it rather than pouring it over his head he might have got a better result!!

25th January 2020

Got me really hammered

Lovely flavour. I really enjoyed sipping this. Unfortunately, I necked a whole half bottle in one evening which resulted in the hangover from Hell the following morning. I can't wait for the next session

29th December 2019

Good stuff for a blend its certainly becoming very popular amongs whiskey drinkers

Great blend and cheap i drink single malt but when i drink blends i have to go for this one. Its getting great reviews so everybody cant be wrong

16th December 2019

Very good value, not unpleasant

There is a very funny review on here; titled 'spiced petrol' or 'odious liquid' ... I have to say this is a trifle unfair but I did chortle at the idea someone likening it to toilet cleaner and so on. For me .. as a blend it's pretty darn good I think! Nice aroma, pretty smooth , remarkable at the price. As good as bells and grouse I think, maybe that's why my bottle says it won silver award for something??? Unless it was up against toilet duck or jif of course

7th December 2019

Excellent value blended whisky

Excellent value for the price from my local store at £11.99 / 70 cl.

30th October 2019

Smooth blend

Bought 200 ml bottle from Booths Supermarket for £9-00. Quality quite acceptable to me, but thought the price might be a bit high?

24th October 2019

Excellent drink give it a try!!!

Very pleasantly surprised this is a excellent smooth blend for the price (Iceland £13.50). I know we all prefer single malts but every day my usual blend is Aldi,s Black Label (8year old £12.99) I will certainly buy Commissioner again, thank you.

20th October 2019

Surprisingly good whisky 🥃

Very pleasant whisky, surprisingly so at the price . Good for mixing and to drink by itself .

8th September 2019

One of the best blends at the price

Nice blended scotch whisky. I'm usually a Grants man for everyday blended scotch drinking at a low price, as a litre is £19.50 in my local supermarket. But if they stocked this in litre bottles at the same price it would be my new alternative to Grants.

13th July 2019

My Personal Favourite

By far my favourite blended scotch to date, tastes great neat or as part of a mixer, very, very good value for money.

21st June 2019

Unpretentious, very good value.

It's alright, it really is. No pomp and circumstance but would say very good value for money. Bought round the local 'quicky mart' for £13.50. Corr what a bargain eh? I'll get another one when it's gone. I'm not an expert but it doesn't make me shudder. Bizarrely (or not) .. whisper.. I recon it's nicer than Grouse!

22nd May 2019

Much better now

I have drank whisky regularly since I was 16. This is fine. It was rough in the eighties, very rough. But now it's fine, better than grants, grouse, own brands, perfectly drinkable neat

19th April 2019

This Is up there

I'm no connoisseur but I do know a good whisky when I taste one and have to say this has the taste of some of the best whisky's out there. Smooth also and cracking value for money

14th March 2019

Why isn’t it more available at supermarkets

Great whisky!

3rd March 2019

Nothing wrong with High Commissioner

Makes me laugh how people say it is not smooth. Of course it isn't. It's whisky.

6th February 2019

Great buy, great taste

This is definitely not a cheap tasting whisky. Excellent value.

5th February 2019

Grand job

Not bad for the price im a Jameson man usually but changed to this for half the price winner winner.

31st January 2019

Great taste

Nice mild taste one of my favourites.

20th January 2019

Each to his/her own. Try it.

For my taste, this is a lovely whiskey. I am not a whiskey snob. Along with co-op own brand blend this is my favourite.

16th January 2019

Spiced petrol

I'm sure the only thing it didn't come with was the rag to light it on fire

2nd January 2019

All in all not a bad blend just lacks advertising

With a title like that its very off putting. But I was shocked at its taste sometimes cheap is not so bad. I guess drinking top shelf makes some people feel aristocratic. Definitely will buy again.

26th December 2018

Roughly take the smooth lol

This is not smooth, it's cheap that's why I bought it, is OK, rough at first then you don't care because your pisht, no hangover though, probably means it's not been in a good oakie for long, 13.00 quid for a 70l dram ain't bad thought mm 😃

22nd December 2018

Somethings changed

It was a good cheaper whisky equivalent to famous grouse but recently you can smell the alcohol first which is like the cheap vodka smell you get.has the company changed anything which would make this happen?

5th October 2018

Great whiskey, ..

My favoutite tipple of all time...itsgreat with lemonade...a.light delight.

27th September 2018

Like a single malt

Excellent smooth whiskey that tastes like a single malt
pleasantly surprised by its quality and value

9th September 2018

Great Scotch

Brought it in Aruba , and to my surprise it is actually one if the best Scotch Whiskey's I've had. Can't find it here in the states, which is a surprising, but I definitely would encourage all smooth Scotch drinkers to try.

17th August 2018

Better than expected 👍

I brought this bottle on price alone, $32 from Coles Liquorland. I haven’t seen it before. I wasn’t expecting too much from a cheap bottle of blended whiskey. Pleasantly surprised, quite tasty and drinkable. I had mine straight over ice. It’s as good as anything twice the price. Recommend

8th July 2018

The price is reasonable. This is my motivation to buy it

good I'm Now in Hong Kong I am with it for lunch.I just bought it for lunch reasonable price

21st June 2018

Very smooth blend. Tipical blended scotch.

By my taste there is a bit more single malt in this blend. The most surprising thing is that there is no headache in the next morning which not depends of the volume you drink in previous evening. Ever!

27th May 2018

Not bad for a 'cheap whiskey'

Asked for the cheapest whiskey in the local offie,so I ended up with High Commissioner. Was expecting it to be a real cheap and nasty hooch .Turned out to be a quite pleasant tipple with none of the unpleasant after burn of Powers ,Famous Grouse or other so called great Irish Whiskeys.
Unlike the afore mentioned brews this doesn't make you want to fight with your own shadow.
Good whiskey for the price.

19th May 2018

It's the only whisky my mum will drink , she loves the taste and has one large one with pure orange every night , lovely blend , not to stronger taste

11th May 2018

Worth trying

I usually sip on White Horse but decided to try this one and was pleasantly surprised. It’s a mild easy drinking whisky and good value for money

15th March 2018

27th February 2018

rather good quality for the price (30 USD at Curaçao)

3rd February 2018

The best!!

The finest quint essential whisky(whiskey) with amazing quality for the amazing brain feed and easy controllable journey to enlightenment x

9th January 2018

One to try whiskey lovers.

For a blended scotch it is quiet a Tastefull whiskey and has a nice kick on the pallat,
It's the first time I have tried it and I will surtenly buy it again

25th December 2017

Great for an "Everyday" tipple!

A great Whisky t0 be enjoyed when the more expensive single malt is not right for the occasion! Light, with a nice smooth and clean afternote finish. A great Dram at a good price!

14th December 2017

Truly odious liquid.

This is the most stomach-churning whiskey I've ever tasted. Cruelly, the initial flavour hit is remarkably enticing, and for 1.5 seconds you'll believe you've coiffed something of quality. Then the midtones of pure pound-store perfume kick in, and with a vengeance: we're not talking about aromas here, soon it tastes like a mix of musk oil, parazone toilet cleaner and sodium laureth sulfate. It escalates from there, becoming more ascerbic through it's exceedingly long finish; a good minute later, you are in no doubt that you've tasted something unfit for consumption. Truly odious liquid.

Review written while disgusted at having taken a short measure, as it unfolded. ymmv.

11th December 2017

20th November 2017

Fantastic for the price

Nicely done blend, not as earthy as most scotch, caramely with a nice lite touch of smoke, surprisingly smooth and tasty. Great choice for the price.

18th November 2017

11th November 2017

The best whisky since Laphroaig.

4th November 2017

Best quality per $ I've ever seen

I'm still sipping my first round while writing this review
There are better scotches, and there are plenty worse

However, I'll say this beats JW red, and Dewars hands down
May not be glen or chivas 18, the quality per dollar category
This scotch wins
Don't get me wrong, a $25 shot of JW blue really ain't that impressive and it's more of just a boisterous and gaudy gesture

This scotch has everything you need in one

13th October 2017

nice drink but struggling to find litre bottles

one of the best blends i have tasted

31st July 2017

Will try again.

It was on sale for under 10 USD (I litre bottle). Bought two bottles. Not bad for the price!

12th July 2017

Unexpected purchase

Bought this from a local "Independent "shop. Pleasantly surprised,a it harsh, mixes well,is satisfying to drink would buy again😃

17th June 2017

Very nice blend

A very nice smelling and tasting blend. I tend to drink single malts, but this one is surprisingly good and very much worth the cost. Tried neat. Smooth and tasty with milk chocolate and caramel. Will definitely buy again. Somewhat alcohol forward but for the price, can't be beat.

15th June 2017

A gentle mild blended scotch

Beautiful whiskey mild slightly sweet and light, not smokey and excellent value for the money.

21st May 2017

It's a quality product.

3rd May 2017

Very good

4th April 2017

Sadly missed from main stores

The most pleasant and inexpensive Scotch whisky I have tasted. Aged in Spanish sherry oak barrels I believe. Was sold in several main UK stores but now disappeared from the shelves. Seems to have been replaced by cheap and tasteless Scotch whiskies said to have been matured in American oak casks. Beware!

9th March 2017

Happy days

I have always been a famous grouse man for years until recently I've found it's stopped doing its job , switched to commissioner for some variety and I think I'll be sticking with it. It's in no way harsh but leaves that lovely warm feeling right through to my bones which we all love :) very impressed with this excellent nip , cheers

28th February 2017

Very surprised

I by no means am a scotch whisky connoisseur, but I've had my share (I'm only 23 mind) my collection boasts bottles of all your swill up to a few £50 - £60 and even a bottle of blue label... But this is really a good whisky, even when I don't regard price. Its crazy but it easily outdoes a lot of your more expensive and reputable bottles (but so is the world of scotch)

9th February 2017

Good flavour good value.

Good strong unusual zesty flavour. Very reasonable price. Can be taken neat to savour or for a long drink good with a dry ginger or diet coke. A whisky l hope we will see (and taste) more of.

3rd February 2017

Spicy and flavourfull

It's value for money. No doubt. Has vanilla notes, and a spicy fragrance. Hints of caramel, and oak scent is evident. Soft on the palate and not harsh. A good whiskey. Had it with ginger ale and crushed ice. Delicious.

8th January 2017

Happily discovered a great whisky.

Recently I discovered this highly underrated whisky. What a bargain compared to many others, which to my mind are inferior. Very smooth to the palate. Good all round quality for an execllent and inexpensive whisky.

17th December 2016

Smooth , well balanced and not too hard in the morning. And the best part is good value for money. Cheaper than the ones which are horrible and harsh on the palate.

11th November 2016

Alan from Essex

The only current scotch that I matched to the taste of High Comm for the price is that supplied by Tesco stores ie. Tesco Special Reserve. Had hopes that the present cheap relabelled Famous Grouse would live up to the original quality - this is not so in my view - I find it tasteless. Are we in a market battle of the scotch suppliers?. I will have to give the Lidl Margot brand a try now - I enjoyed it in the past!

5th November 2016

Alan from Essex

Best cheap scotch that was available. Now off local markets and replaced with cheap relabelled rubbish which I doubt has seen an oak bin. Now back to my old favourite Whyte & MacKay which shows a 3 year oak bin age. Is the online High Comm any good?

5th November 2016

The best awful whiskey in the world

This is the only whiskey my local 24-hour garage sells, it's also what my local pub sells you if you ask for the cheapest alcohol they have, and it's also the bottle you're most likely to see poking out from under a sleeping bag in the town centre. It's basically one step up from Meths.
And yet, it's really not a bad whiskey. It's a bit harsh, but it's flavourful and, if you've already had half a dozen decent scotches, you're unlikely to really notice that it isn't as good.

22nd October 2016

Allan from Mauritius

We bought a box of 12 bottles for my grandfatherş 100 birthday and tell you what i was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this cheap blended scotch, smooth and rather sweet, however the finish was of a poor quality but you can't expect much for what is a simple scotch, but certainly i would buy another bottle easily drinkable with a simple drop of water..

4th October 2016

As normally i would drink single malt, i find this whisky a pleasant change for a blend whisky , plus an acceptable price . Well done :)

26th August 2016

Very smooth

15th August 2016

Not bad

An average whisky that has an odd aftertaste. Reminds me of ASDA's own brand MCKendricks. Bought on a whim and will buy again as a cheap mixing whisky.

18th July 2016

Best bang for your buck

I've been drinking this for years! I have about 40 top end single malts in my collection, so I use high commissioner for a mixing whiskey. Goes amazing with 7up, tonic, even fruitier sodas and Redbull. For the price you can't go wrong.

8th July 2016

My fav brand

Awesome taste

3rd June 2016

Dave S

For a blend it is very good.I hope the production of this item continues.

19th May 2016

I like it

28th April 2016

Sir Nigel

Given a bottle of this whisky for my birthday. Took one sip and poured the rest down the sink.
I would rather drink cleaning fluid.

16th April 2016

Surprised? Yeah!!

I bought this because it was quite cheap and Whyte & MacKay gives me heartburn. Tried it neat to compare (with lots of other whiskies I've tried) and it was beautiful. It may end up being my regular tipple.

20th March 2016

High Commissioner blended

Starts off with a nice blended whisky taste but what on earth is that aftertaste all about? Reminds me of the smell of freshly sprayed dogs urine!
I certainly don't recommend :(

13th January 2016

Its cheap

28th December 2015

For the price, actually quite decent.

This is my go to scoth when I'm semi broke. For a very attractive price tag this is pretty decent stuff. I've had MUCH worse for much more money than this. VERY decent whisky!

26th December 2015

wonderfull smooth blended scotch, cannot believe the price, pity morrisons stopped stocking it at £15.99 a ltr it was a bargain.its
stopped them selling thier own stupid plastic bottle of petrol.
comment further down by steesh must be his ist taste of whisky or he works for another distillery or he has not got a won't find a smoother whisky.

28th October 2015

Nothing special

Taste dominated by grain spirits. Ok for the price but nothing special.

16th August 2015

A surprisingly smooth blend, and without doubt, a better buy than the likes of Tesco's harsh blend...a real no brainer...

24th July 2015

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Got a taste in the local shop here in Sweden and was really surprised when they told me the price after. Expected it to be a more expensive bottle.

Ended up buying a whole crate of ten bottles for long storage. Perfect whiskey for those days when you want a drink but don't wanna bring out the finer bottles.

22nd July 2015

sue merrick

The new bottle looks great... but it is too tall to fit in the cupboard!!! Will have to look at supermarket alternative, which is a shame, as we enjoy high commissioner.x

21st June 2015

Superb value for money, love the new bottle shape, looks a lot more expensive than it is. Great product I have used for a few years now.

27th March 2015

Rev Denis Dinneen

I got a present of High Commissioner and when I went ot give people a drink over the weekend I found out that there was no screw cap attached to the bottle just the seat and a paper disc needless to say it had ruined a good bottle of whisky and I had to throw it out as it was terrible and could not be consumed. So it broke my heart to have to give my cherished Hennesy Cognac instead.

9th March 2015

This blend is outstanding. I was very sorry that morrisons has decided to discontinue this line. Will just have find somewhere else to shop.I'll miss you Morrisons.

31st January 2015

For the price - a winner!

Saw this for the first (and perhaps last) time while traveling in Burma. Price was $1.50 (US) a pint. Wasn't the smoothest, but felt absolutely fantastic in the morning. Looking forward to running in to "the commissioner" again.

24th January 2015

Bought this to keep the natives happy and the more expensive single malts under lock and Key , surprisingly this whisky was very pleasant to the point of opening the malts and having a tasting session

25th November 2014

5 Stars whisky

I used to drink this every day when I was 17'ish, on the beach, with some coke gently served on Pepsi carton pints, shared with friends and endless nights of summer. Just for the bond i got to it I give him 5 stars.

3rd October 2014

On a Cruise recently we called at Gibralter on the way back to Southampton. The first shop we came to on the way to the centre was selling High Commissioner Whisky for £4.50 a litre.Had to buy a bottle at this price. It's great value and tastes good.

21st August 2014

decent and affordable

this whisky benefits from a few drops of water, smooths out the wrinkles, takes on a "Teacher's" quality.Certainly not the worst bottle you'll ever have.£17 per litre, who's complaining?

5th June 2014

Alan Hirst

Changed my opinion now. This is the one i want and look to drink always.

26th January 2014

Good, honest Scotch

For the money this has to be a bargain. Not the most subtle of whiskies but does not disappoint.

17th January 2014

Great Value

I had to give it 4 stars for the quality for the price. Its very pleasant and smooth to drink. It is better than many costing more. Its worth a try for the money. I saw it today in Iceland would you believe for £13. Johnny Norfolk.

6th December 2013

Surprisingly good, given the price

From time to time I drink blended whiskies (basically if I can't be bothered to go to the more distant shop to get Macallan) and I thought this was really pretty good. It doesn't have the sort of nasty twang after taste of Famous Grouse, not that weird immediate taste of Bells, and the 70cl I bought was only £13. Perfectly reasonably to drink straight.

16th November 2013

good ane

First time that i bought and its really nice

13th October 2013

on offer

Morrisons is 15.99 a litre tgink al try it

4th October 2013

Gift PS

Sorry, missed off the rating!

15th September 2013

I was given an almost full litre bottle of this recently as the person that purchased it didn't like it,.
I was expecting it to be a rough, burning type Scotch, but have to say it beats most of the well known blends hands down.
Ok, it's no single malt, but I will definitely buy some when this bottle runs out, which will be sooner rather than later!

15th September 2013

Dougie Parton

A richt gweed tipple.Nae bad ata fan ye consider how chep it iz.Aye,well worth the coppers

27th August 2013

wouldn't clean an engine with this vile beverage. Remove it from the market quickly before someone becomes realy ill

27th August 2013

Mr Bob Webster

A really good smooth whiskey with a pleasant aftertaste. Remarkable for the price. My first choice every time. I only wished that more pubs would stock it.

13th June 2013

Big Dawg

Not bad at all. Smooth. Clear defined taste. Definitely better than some other blends I had tried.

12th May 2013

Minimum Pricing

This one will go under if minimum pricing becomes us a favor!!!!

3rd May 2013

Mr Alan Hirst.

A Surprisingly nice whisky at the price.

1st November 2012

Not worth waiting for!!!

This is the most worthless whiskey I ever tasted.

22nd October 2012

great value

has a distinct rawness that I find more enjoyable than a smooth whisky.

13th September 2012

safed our holidays

been recently to myanmar and cambodia. hc was the only good drink we could find. the price is very reasonable, the taste is brilliant.

18th March 2012

Surprisingly good

More class than it's price and awful label suggest. One of the better budget blends.

27th October 2011

nice one

Smooth taste, and nice effects. Will be the right choice.
It's worth it. real Whisky taste
