The Laphroaig PX Cask is made with whisky matured in three types of cask - American oak casks, Quarter casks and the titular Pedro Ximénez casks. This leads to a flavour profile which ties together classic, powerful Laphroaig smoke and wine-like sweetness. It was originally released for Travel Retail.

Sherry behind the gentle peat smoke, still the smoke of laphroaiginess, and a weak hint of orange peels. Complexity. The aroma kicks in on the palate with the 48% abv, but it's not sharp, and there's no metallic taste typically for a very young whisky. Citrus and oak in a second taste wave that will come if you press the whisky between your teeth and let some oxygen in. Fruity and sweet, at that have to be from the PX casks, I think. A long sweet, peppery and warm aftertaste. Tar. Yes, its mouthwatering. Maybe the texture should have been a bit thicker, maybe more creamy, so that the 48% abv. could have delivered an even greater experience..? Not to be negative, because I really thin the aroma is close to full. A very good product, and I think it will do its comeback in the early 2020s. I don't think it will only disappear in the history.
Laphroaig had been my favourite whisky for a long time. It didn't change (not that I noticed) but I think my preferences did. I enjoy a bit more character and subtlety. This hits that spot perfectly. I still get the peaty smoke and phenols that Laphroaig 10 year old is famous for with an added sweetness and fruitiness. There is a mature balanced smoky, sweet, peppery, oaky smoothness in place of the ten year old's intense taste-bud mugging with a big peat stick. The ten year old's intensity is great, but this is different and I like it. This also doesn't have the harshness that some NAS whiskies have. It doesn't taste like it is hiding cheap spirit like some NAS whisky. A quality product. One of the best I've had.
Asked for an Islay Single Malt at the Duty Free, similar to one I am familiar with. PX CASK is smoother, more harmonious. Now I know what to look for on my next trip from and to South America.
Perfect blend of sweet and peat!
This is a Laphgroaig for those looking for a less overt style of peat inclusion. For me it lacks the character of the 10yo or Quarter Cask. It's smooth, in the same way that a Merlot wine, or slickly performed Shostakovich symphony, is lacking in interest or authenticity.
