Laphroaig Càirdeas Origin - Fèis Ìle 2012

Cairdeas means friendship in Gaelic, a fitting moniker for a bottling released to celebrate the distillery's popular friends programme. It's really rather good.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Buttery and soft, with just a wisp of smoked kippers. There's only the slightest hint of the carbolic notes you find in the ten year old expression. It's a heavy butterscotch sweetness that runs the show, with a hefty portion of salted caramel.

    Palate

Rounded and smooth, the butter spreads itself, melts and reveals Laproaig's signature smoky heart. It's pungent but not overpowering, a cushion of smoke rather than an enveloping cloud. But this is a big mouth-filling whisky; it just does it with finesse. That sweetness from the nose is heavily pronounced, and tastes remarkably like the crumbly fudge you find all over Islay.

    Finish

    Sweet, long and comforting.

    Overall

A well-named and delicious whisky. I want to spend more time with it.

I never met a Laphroaig I liked until now

I like a bit of peat and smoke but I've not been a big fan of the whiskies with more medicinal notes. Too many years in nursing I reckon; if it tastes and smells antiseptic, it should be on something icky. Friends of mine got me some of this to try and it was a delightful surprise. It was fairly gentle on the palette with a more mellow smoke than I expected and a subtle citrus tang that was a surprise too. The antiseptic was hovering somewhere in the background but not close enough to override the other flavours. It had a warm, creamy, lingering finish that left me wanting just a little bit more. Finally, a Laphroaig I could be friends with.

I waited for about 5 months

Finally stocked at one of our favorite stores. $48 US. Bought one for my birthday, and tomorrow will purchase 2 more. Delicious!

Maybe not as old as you think

"We specially retained some of our very first Cairdeas for the 'Friends' 18th birthday expression .This whisky is now between 13 and 21 years old. We then blended it (50:50) with some new spirit fully matured in quarter casks for 7 years and bottled it without any chill filtering for maximum flavour. It is at 51.2% ABV strength." --Distiller's notes It should be more complex than the last, which was all younger whisky. I've ordered a few bottles in the US, but haven't opened one yet. Soon. Regards, Brian

    FOL

Laphroaig has been a favourite for many years and this is the best that I recall having. With a few drops of water I found quite smooth and fruity by Laphroaig standards with less iodine and a slightly oily finish that tapers to dry quite quickly. Absolutely outstanding (and even more so that it was only $100 in Canada)
