Distilled on Islay in April 1998, this Laphroaig single malt was left to mature in a refill hogshead for over two entire decades. After slumbering for 21 years, the hogshead was cracked open and Douglas Laing bottled it up in August 2019. The whisky was independently bottled at 56.3% ABV for the Xtra Old Particular series, with an outturn of 213 bottles. No colouring or chillfiltering to be seen here.
The nose brings a gentle smokiness initially, then comes rock pools, seaweed and a BBQ’d meat style.
On the palate, detect damp earth alongside dried peat, smoke from a winter fire and warming spices.
The long and lingering finish reveals with mocha, salted caramel and more of that archetypal Islay peat smoke.
