Lagavulin 1995 (bottled 2011) Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish - Distillers Edition

Lagavulin 1995-2011 DE Bottling Note

The 1995 vintage of Lagavulin's delicious Distillers Edition. This stuff is finished in sweet Pedro Ximenez dessert sherry casks, and it's bloomin' marvelous. Very smoky and very thick, sweet and sticky. Beautiful with chocolates after dinner!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Smoky and woody. Hints of forest floor, wood sheds, cut hay, sultanas, rum and raisin icecream and porcini mushrooms.

Palate: Creamy and very Christmassy! Lots of peat smoke, nut oil, hazelnut, cocoa, sultanas, crispy bacon, a little kipper, sticking plasters and molasses.

Finish: Old rum, nutmeg, rhubarb and dark chocolate fudge.

The best of best! Lagavulin's finest product.
I've purchased most every Distillers' Edition of Lagavulin since the early 90s. I've managed to score 3 bottles of this one, and one remains unopened. It is the finest of their already excellent products.

Proof God Smiles on the Single Malt Drinker
The Lagavulin DE95 is without a doubt my favorite whisky. The mellow complexity of this dark and smoky treat, which modulates into crisp notes of citrus and white grape, leaves a delightful finish of toasted almond and chocolate on the palate, like an old friend who lingers a moment after the party has left for a deep and meaningful goodbye.

Very Good - But...
Don't get me wrong...This is very good. However, I would place it 4th behind Laphroaig18, Lagavulin16, and Lagavulin12 Special Edition. It is not as smooth as the 16, not a smokey as Laphroaig, and cant come near the Special Edition in any way. It does have LOTS of good flavor but seems to lack the refinement of the other 3. Should you buy it? Yes, of course, if you want variety or enjoy trying new and delicious scotches.

Beats the 16 year old by a hair!
I frequent the 16 year old, so I thought I'd try this one. Let me put it this way....
It's an olympic photo finish. So when I say it beats the 16 year old it by a hair – there is a lot happening in the space of a hair. Plainly put, It's darker, it has more smoke and peat and a spicy finish that appears minutes later.

Lagavulin 1995 Distillers Edition
Nose: Sweet peat, and smoke. Malty tar and liquorish. Nice…
Taste: Sweet, tarry peat. Sweet liquorice and spice. Long finish.
This is a great dram, but the regular Lagavulin 16 year old is just as good, and cheaper… so I just don’t see the point with the distillers edition.

Incredible
I tried this at Leeds Whisky festival recently and had to buy a bottle. This was easily my favourite out of the 30-something whiskies I tried that night! Thoroughly recommended.
