Lagavulin 16 Year Old Bottling Note

Lagavulin 16 Year Old was first released in the early 1990s, and was originally intended to be a limited edition bottling. However, due to its popularity, Lagavulin 16 Year Old has become a permanent part of the Lagavulin range.

A much sought-after single malt Scotch whisky with the massive peat-smoke that's typical of southern Islay - but also offering richness and a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting tipple. Lagavulin 16 year old has truly become a benchmark Islay dram from the Lagavulin distillery.

Lagavulin 16 year old is perhaps more smoky than peaty, and has a wonderful flavour that pertains to Lapsang Souchong tea…

If you're looking for a food pairing for this beauty, try intensely flavoured salty blue cheeses, which complement the intense, peat rich, sweet and salty character of this Lagavulin wonderfully.

A classic Scotch whisky, Lagavulin's 16 year old is a benchmark malt from Islay's south coast. This is perhaps more smoky than peaty, and has a wonderful flavour that pertains to Lapsang Souchong tea…

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: More like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature Sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning.

Palate: Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and Sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.

Finish: Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.

Lagavulin 16 Year Old Reviews

Don’t waste your money

Prices have increased and quality has dropped off, this is a pale imitation even compared to just a few years ago. There’s plenty of better peated whiskies and a whole world of better value, don’t be fooled by the name and brand; the King of Islay is no more.

May become my favorite scotch.

I just opened a bottle of Lagavulin 16 which I received as a gift last year. I have to say, wow. So smooth and loved the smokiness and a not overpowering peatiness. I don't drink a lot of scotch but this may become a regular glass for me.

Waste of my $120 us dollars

Absolutely the worst tasting scotch I ever tasted
Overbearing smoke flavor stuck on my tongue as I rolled it in my mouth
I drank about a third of the bottle over a few times, each time with same reaction to its flavor
It sits on my scotch shelf, not sure if I should dump it Or actually offer it to my friends

The Best whisky by miles. None come near

Great dram

Great plated whisky, lacks weight in mouth feel.

Smoother than I expected.

If you find Laphroaig a bit harsh, then try Lagavulin 16. I personally like Laphroaig but think I have now found my second favourite!

Wow.

Not normally a peaty/smoky Scotch drinker as I prefer the milder Speyside whiskies. However...was given a glass of the Lagavulin 16 and was blown away. Smooth, complex without being overpowering like some of the Laphroaigs. Wow. My absolute new favorite.

Just not good! Love my Glenlivet!

Nothing I would buy. Taste like an old burnt cigar.

The king of the Islay malts

Lagavulin 16 yr was my introduction to single malt whisky and whilst i now enjoy a range of malts from across Scotland Lagavulin is like my first born. The depth of the smokeyness and the warmth of the peateness is just right.

Stunning

Brilliant. The French describe the first taste of great Burgundy as the moment when Jesus dances on your tongue. This whisky is the holy trinity doing the 4 hand reel in your mouth. Smoke and full sweetness with no burn.
