Lagavulin has become a Special Releases stalwart – and for good reason. The classic Islay distillery is beloved by peat fans (and everyone's favourite Parks director, Ron Swanson). This year's 12 year old candidate brings together the characteristic island smoke with the sweetness of American hogsheads, all wrapped up in a natural cask strength bottling. It's meaty and robust – Ron would certainly approve.

Meaty and mezcal-like with cola ham and a little putty.
Classic smoky embers and burnt ends. Full flavoured with balancing sweetness, great stuff.
Long, slightly drier but still balanced with plenty of ash and smoke.

Unbelievably good Islay scotch. This is the only release of the 12 year old Lagavulin I have had, but I enjoy it loads more than both the 16 and 8 year Lagavulin expressions. It drinks quite easily for the proof, but takes a splash of water really well also. Based on this whisky, I really believe 12 years is the "sweet spot" for Lagavulin, as this one just has a perfect balance of the vibrant smoke and fruity character of the 8 year, but is so full, rich, and creamy (especially on the finish) which the 8 year lacks. The smoke and sweetness are just perfectly integrated and this whisky has one of the best finishes of anything I've tried to date. There are some peated scotches which I find a little too ashy and funky tasting, but this one is pure enjoyment from start to finish. Smashing good stuff.
The very very best one from Islay.
Haven't had one this good in a long time. Perfect balance of heather and sweet barley.
It doesn’t get much better than this!
The best peated whisky I have had to date! Keith @ The Malted Man Cave
