When you play the game of thrones, you win or you... drink delicious whisky! Part of the exciting Game of Thrones Single Malts Collection, this 9-year-old whisky was distilled by the Islay-based Lagavulin distillery. It has been exclusively matured in 100% fresh bourbon casks, giving it a gorgeous light golden colour. If a Lannister always pays his debts, perhaps they could do so next time with a bottle of this Lagavulin.
May we follow in the words of Tyrion Lannister: 'I drink and I know things.'
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
The nose is characteristically Lagavulin with the sweet smoke exploding on the nose providing a little more zesty, Maritime brine than the other expressions. The palate opens with sweet, smokey caramelized banana, burnt marshmallow and Vanilla which subsides into a light dry menthol and salted caramel finish.
Seeing this whisky in the Flash Sale, I decided to take chance that it wasn't just a gimmick of linking whiskies to the epic TV programme - and I am glad I did. I have always enjoyed the Laga 16 and this 9yo is certainly different from that but most decidedly Lagavulin nonetheless. Young but full-flavoured with all the characteristic smoke and brine, vanilla and subtle sweetness. perhaps a little thinner in body than the 16 despite its extra proof but it is an enjoyable dram.
The MoM description is perfect. A stunning malt
Deep, beautiful malt
I was lucky enough to be in a distillery (one of the other participants in this promotion but not lagavulin) - the guys in the distillery had done the tasting and while they were pleased with their offering they had rated the lagavulin as the best of the bunch. I was poured a measure and was immediately stunned. It is a fabulous expression and in my humble opinion far better than the usual 16 year old. It is a stunning dram and as others will no doubt mention seemed older than it’s years for its complexity and fullness. All respected reviews are saying the same thing so ignore the promotion and grab a bottle for its own sake.
My bottle arrived this afternoon. This is yet another delicious expression from Lagavulin. Very clever with pricing, definitely good to buy to drink, really a stunning malt, but I am sure this will also become collectible quite quick, depending on how long it’s knocking about for. Really enjoyable and a bit saltier than the 16yr, amazing depth of flavour for what is a relatively young malt. Absolutely recognisable as a Lagavulin, sweet smoke etc. Well done people at Lagavulin and thank you
