    Nose

Fruity with notes of apples, pears and rich briny peat smoke, alongside sticking plasters and barley malt.

    Palate

Spicy and rich with notes of cedar, ginger, sweet pipe tobacco and malt, with more than a hint of oily, medicinal smoke.

    Finish

Good length with tart citrus, pepper and pine resin.

For me - still the best Kilkerran so far

A subtle Kilkerran, but with plenty of flavour. I've tried all of them so far (save for WIP7 s/w - got a bottle, but not cracked it yet) but this is still my favourite and still the one I'd reach for of the WIP series. This one was good enough to bottle and sell as a standard bottling IMO. The splits between Bourbon and Sherry are/were very interesting, but this could have been the finished article already at about 7yo. I like the Kilkerran WIP4 also, but a bit more spicy. My rating for these so far is WIP3, WIP7 cask strength b/w (the cleanest so far - very subtle), WIP6 b/w, WIP4, WIP6 s/w, WIP5 b/w, WIP2, WIP1, WIP5 s/w. The last one is still very good and these are all quality drams; very clean, subtle, oily; the sherry can be perhaps a little powerful on its own, but that's probably splitting hairs. The way malt whisky should be; no intruding/artificial flavours - big, honest, yet subtle at the same time. Not at all peaty of course, but sometimes you want a change from Lag/Ard/Tal etc - all fantastic whiskies, but I'm after some light and shade
