Kilbeggan Bottling Note

Kilbeggan is named after St Bécán, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland who founded a monastery in the area in the 6th century. Smooth and malty.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

The nose is smooth and gentle with nut oils, hazelnut and barley, cereal sweetness and a little peat. The palate is of good body with honeyed sweetness and malt. The finish is short with oaked dryness.

Kilbeggan Reviews

Far from extraordinary.

Usually, due to Irish Whiskeys being less complex than Scotch, you find well-balanced, pleasant, friendly flavours. With Killbeggan, I get sharp ethanol with little flavours really standing out over it. If you're going Irish, Jameson is a much better budget option, or try your hand with more complex flavours in the Bushmills range.

Just beautiful

Beautiful tasting whisky, smooth and honey like.

When I first tasted was the first time I experienced an explosion of different flavours. Each flavour separate yet combined to give a wholly individual tasting whiskey...A great find for a life long whiskey drinker to discover - Killbegin has a new follower.

Vanilla Frosting

Vanilla and smooth sweet caramel. Wonderful & inexpensive daily dram. Double distilled goodness.

28th May 2019

Really good for the price

Other reviewers are correct, the smell is harsh, but if taste is more important to you than smell, you can't go wrong here.
The taste is very smooth and the aftertaste is pleasant. Probably the best liqueur (not just whiskey) you can buy for under $20.

A great mix of quality and affordability

A lovely Irish whiskey, quite soft and smooth both on the nose and on the palette. Extremely good quality for it's quite affordable price.

Nose: Honey, malt, vanilla, citrus, fresh grass, barley dough
Taste: Again honey, sweet malt, green apple, cereal/grain
Aftertaste: Long, smooth and minty

When the sun explodes in 5 million years, this alone will have made humanity's existence worthwhile

The best Irish whiskey - and cheaper than some. Soft, creamy, like dew, butter, and nectar. The strongest flavour is malt, and that's what I like. Nothing even remotely harsh about it (unlike Scotch, which I detest).

All those using adjectives such as "harsh" below - honestly, have you ever tasted an alcoholic drink before? How old are you, ten? This is the single smoothest spirit I have ever tasted.

I have been soaking in various high-end single malts for a while now, mostly Irish (Tyrconnell, Connemara, Green Spot, etc.) and recently tried Kilbeggan after all of these when I noticed that Connemara is also made by Kilbeggan distillery too. I was delighted by how lovely this is - easily as good as some twice its price. A fine, noble, drop, which not everybody deserves. Treat yourself to this with some smoked pork and a cheese board, then post your review.

I have just finished one bottle and am now proceeding to buy a case, something no spirit has ever made me do.

To the fella talking down to others about drinking lemonade...

Yes, alcohol (ethanol) is in whiskey and other distilled spirits. It is also chemcially quite distinct from turpentine, acetone and other solvents, air-fix glue, etc. A distilled product contains far more than just ethanol, though (unless it's a rectified, column still product like vodka). Methanol, fusel alcohols and many other compounds can be present. The art of distillation and then maturation is that flavor is at the forefront while unpleasant features are minimized. Lots of quality malts and blends are not harsh, not solventy or fusile and don't wreak like vanilla-flavored superglue. It might occur to you that some reviewers are actually experienced with spirits and express their fair opinion. It is you who is trying to elevate a mixer cocktail booze to some level of elegance. I won't tell you to drink lemonade or grape juice but I do suggest you find some really quality spirits to enjoy, including quality Irish Whiskey.

A good Irish whiskey

To those who think this smells/tastes of turpentine or chemicals... please go drink lemonade or grape juice. It is Irish Whiskey. It contains alcohol. It is going to taste, to some degree, of alcohol. Alcohol is, technically, an organic compound, i.e. a chemical. If you don't appreciate the taste of alcohol, why are you drinking whiskey in the first place? Not trying to start a fight, but what exactly do you think it is supposed to taste like?

31st March 2018

A bit harsh

Dave says. It tastes like his twelve year old underpants. A hint of richness.

One of the roughest Irish whiskeys out there. I couldn't finish 5cl bottle and I drink Irish whiskeys quite often.
You have been warned.

My favourite irish whiskey for everyday

10th January 2018

Best Irish Whisky

Having conducted extensive testing during a trip to Ireland, a companion and myself determined Kilbeggan to be the superior Irish Whisky. We have yet to be convinced otherwise.

12th October 2017

Top draw...I have already mentioned it to my whiskey drinking friends.

I have been drinking whiskey for over 20yrs scottish/irish/Welsh. .
I had my first taste of kilbeggan just over a week ago. I am of Irish descent but had not come across this whiskey I have no doubt this is the best I have tasted and I will be drinking this from now on.

19th September 2017

Sound, but overpriced.

For me Kilbeggan sits between an Irish whiskey and a bourbon, maybe the woody aftertaste.
Would probably sell well in America, like Dunphys.
Tis slightly overpriced too.
Paddy and Powers gold label are better, and cheaper.

10th May 2017

For the price it is an excellent option

For under $20 you just can't beat this Whiskey!

30th December 2016

The best Irish for the money?

I'll say! In this price range this one (and Powers) are more my style. More traditional flavours here, if that is what you consider a good thing. I do! Some people think that Irish whiskey has to be blended to the point of neutral honey sweetness. That's cool. I'll take this one though. Much more robust and yet as smooth as you would expect!

7th June 2016

Just a person that likes well - crafted Whiskey.

I was lucky enough to find this fine Traditional Irish Whiskey in one of our local stores. I must say after years of looking for an exceptional Whiskey that I can enjoy, it is great that I found this one. It is smooth, yet distinctly flavorful and it seems to me that it is a very pure and properly produced Whiskey. Much appreciation to Kilbeggan for crafting such a superb Whiskey. I will continue to enjoy this wonderful product as long as I draw breath. No more searching :)

19th March 2016

Good taste

The only thing i dislikw about this whiskey is the added coloring agent "Caramel color", please make this fine whiskey without added Caramel color. That would be great. Thank You!

Eric Mason

If you do not change things they will stay as they are,and that is fantastic. Keep up the great work, your distillers have heavenly hands. Truly one from the gods.

12th March 2016

The only alcohol that I drink is Irish Whiskey and I've tried numerous brands. Had my first bottle of Kilbeggan last November and I was stunned at how good it is for the price, so much so that I bought 6 bottles. Need I say more?

17th February 2016

A taste of Ireland

I first tasted this whiskey in an "Irish" pub in Montreal. I immediately got that feeling... like I was back in Ireland!

If the atmosphere of a true Irish pub could be transformed into a whiskey, this would be it. Kilbeggan tastes like the inside of an old pub in Ireland!

I'm quite surprised by the reviews saying that this whiskey is harsh or tastes "chemical". I found it quite smooth and sweet, myself.

9th February 2016

Truly terrible

The smell can only be described as terpentine mixed with an hint of acetone. It truly stings the nostrils.
And the taste offer in no way any improvements on that worringly first impression. It has a medicinal feel to it, no notes whatsoever other then purely chemical.

Thankfully I was offered a glass of it, before I had time to buy a bottle, hence saving me from a lot of grief.

16th January 2016

late arrival christmas prezzie - joxer

it arrived late due to my timing on the order .However; well worth waiting for and not to be dished out to others lightly . it's a superb drink a lot lighter palate than the Jameson's ,which I also love to bits light sweet taste with a profound oak finish ...delicious !. I can understand how the Irish pot still whiskeys had the monopoly on the market till a 100 years ago due wars civil and other which was to the Scots advantage...but Ireland's whiskeys are becoming popular again ...thank God !

11th January 2016

Very smooth

I find it to be very smooth and easily drinkable. It's not harsh and goes down clean.

4th January 2016

Decently smooth and decent flavor.

Picked this up for $20 at the liquor store and pleased for the price. It's reasonably smooth and flavorful, doesn't need mixed to enjoy it at least.

28th December 2015

Beautiful Whiskey

I really enjoy my whiskeys from glenmorangie to Glenfiddich. Was in Athlone in july 2015. Bought a few bottles of Kilbeggan Whiskey from the distillery. Beautiful smooth taste, 1 of my favorites i have to say. Will be buying a Case in the new year.

27th December 2015

Rob Walters

I have had Jamesons and Paddy before and found Kilbeggan a bit of a disappoinment to my palate - I usually expect a more peaty flavour from an Irish whiskey.

11th November 2015

lovely whiskey

really nice whiskey very good smell and taste what more do you want.

6th November 2015

Simply the best

The best Irish whiskey!!!

8th September 2015

Better than Jameson

I was turned on to this by a tour guide in Ireland 6 years ago and it has been my go to whiskey ever since, I was settling for Jameson before that, but this not only made me reconsider my choice, but also led me to explore other lesser known entry level Irish Whiskeys, glad I did because there are many other great ones that aren't as well known as Jameson such as Powers, Tyrconnell, and Teeling, this is stil my favorite though

26th June 2015

Steve Curtin

My grand children bought me a bottle for Christmas, which I opened and poured a sizable glass there and then. I thought it a little harsh at the time so I put the lid back on and continued the day with my bottle of Scotch. However, after a month or so when the Scotch had run out I took a dram of the Kilbeggan. A different feel about it altogether. Smooth and full in the mouth. Had some of the harshness evaporated into the airspace at the top of the bottle?? Who knows, but its a lovely drop now.

14th February 2015

Anthony Lander

Impressed. Loved it. Was given a little bottle and will be getting a big one. Tons of character if enjoyed in a good glass. This is now my favourite blend.

26th January 2015

Fire Water

I like Irish whiskey for its smoothness. This whiskey is harsher than some moonshines I have drank straight from the still. It's $30+ a bottle in my neck of the woods. A dodgy dram for the price.

Rev. Philip Gummett

Excellent. This is my first taste of your whiskey. I think it is grand. Diolch yn fawr, as they sat here in Wales.

26th October 2014

очень мягкий!

за 909р неплохой в ценовой категории виски, даже лучших некоторых.

2nd May 2014

Not a good one

I only drink Irish whiskey. That being said there is not much of a selection here in Portland. This might be the worst Irish whiskey I have ever tried. Leaves you with a bit of a hang over if not careful, which is unlike most Irish whiskey.I like Powers, Michael Collins, Jameson, but my favorite is Tyrconnell.

25th February 2014

Value for money

Tried a bottle bought at a duty-free shop. For the price, it is a good bargain: smooth just like traditional Irish, notes of sugar, grapes and nuts with a little pepper/spice. Would not mind buying this again.

8th December 2013

Great Value

A good all rounder especially when my local liquor store sells it for $16.99.
