Kaiyo Whisky

Kaiyo Whisky is very intriguing indeed, starting out as a teaspooned malt (with the bulk of the malt whisky coming from one distillery, along with a drop of malt whisky from another distillery, meaning it can't be called a single malt). It's matured in mizunara oak - mizunara can impart a wonderful array of flavours to the whisky, though its notoriously difficult for coopers to work with. Not only that, it spends a portion of its maturation at sea, helping to evolve its flavour profile further.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Orange peel, jasmine, a hint of coastal air, soft cedar.

Palate Coffee bean, green apple, black tea and alpine herbs.

Finish Cinnamon rolls and mango.

Couldn't be happier for the price.
Amazing whiskey received as a present from my boss and couldn't be more happy. Really enjoy The Peated bottle (Orange label) as well. Looking forward to trying the cask strength. price is fair for the quality of the whiskey.

Worth Every Penny
Excellent whiskey. The aging at sea in mizunara oak barrels produces a very pleasant sipping whiskey. I like the Cask Strength but for the money the black label Kaiyo does the job.
Looking for big things when they get their distillery built.

A good but not great Japanese whisky
As a fan of Nikka from the Barrel, Nikka Coffey Grain and Nikka Coffey Malt, I use those as my benchmarks when it comes to Japanese whisky. The Kaiyo comes in middle of the pack, and I would say it's a decent value for Japanese whisky. Woodsy and floral at the same time, with the traditional caramel notes in the finish. I did not detect the briny, sea salt notes as some have had. It's a good guy, but not in the same league as Nikka or Hibiki.

Top 14 whisky or 2019 by Whisky Advocate
This was my first Japanese whisky. I bought this because of the Whisky Advocate 92 rating and top 14 whisky of 2019. I have to say, I might have found my new favorite whisky. I now understand all the Japanese whisky hype is all about.

Best whisky of the year
Might be one of the best Japanese whisky, I've had all year (I have over 20 in my collection). Great character, flavor and long beautiful finish.

Very smooth
Great whisky, my only complaint is that it might be too smooth. I almost finished the bottle with my friend in one sitting.
