    Jim Beam Double Oak

There's an old axiom that claims "Two heads are better than one". Can that theory be transferred to whiskey barrels? Jim Beam's Double Oak might answer that question. You see, they initially mature this bourbon in freshly charred American oak barrels, and then move the whiskey over to a fresh set of freshly charred American oak barrels for the second part of its maturation!

A worthy replacement for the now discontinued Jim Beam Black.

    Try in a Peach Smash:

  • 50ml Jim Beam Double Oak

  • 20ml fresh lemon juice

  • 20ml peach puree or 1/2 a muddled fresh peach

  • 15ml sugar syrup

Add the ingredients above to a shaker with cubed ice and shake hard for 4 seconds. Strain over crushed ice in a rocks glass and garnish with a sprig of mint and a lemon wedge.

  • Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Full-bodied vanilla, old oak, milk chocolate and a kick of cardamom.

    Palate

Subtly peppery/oak-y at first. Soon enough, waves and waves of vanilla ice cream bring balance to the palate. A few touches of fruity malt.

    Finish

Charred oak toastiness lingers long on the finish.

    More complex with each sip

Very moreish butterscotch vanilla toastiness. By the 3rd or 4th sip, the finish becomes somewhat saltier like buttered popcorn. I like it.

Worth a £20 spend, good starter bourbon

Never tried bourbon but saw this on at £20 so why not. Great nose to this, richer and sweeter than the Irish pot stills I drink. Has a smooth taste, nice and mellow on the tongue and heat in the throat. A splash of water takes the heat out of it. A nice way to spend £20. Bizarre discovery ; this goes really really well with crispy duck and hoisin sauce.

    Meh

Not a Beam fan. There mass market products are so disappointing. However, when I saw the double oak I am always willing to give a try. I think in the end the outcome was to be expected. This is white label rebarreled for no more than a year, likely less maybe 6 months to a year. Anyway, no surprise in such a short time all it picks up is charcoal. Amazing a producer of Bookers/Knob Creek and Basil Hayden/Old Grand Dad releases this stuff. I get it, obviously it works...good thing we have choices. At $20'ish the obvious alternatives are Old Forester 100, Old Bardstown BIB or Weller Special Reserve if you would consider a wheated.

    My First Whiskey

I have never really had whiskey before but decided i would try some new things. the first few tastes were just pure alcohol/ethanol, but once i opened up to it and started really searching for the tastes i found a real niceness to it. it burns quite a bit for me but again i have never really had strong alcohol before. I look forward to tasting more whiskies now because of this.

Make this your Jim Beam sipper.

After trying the white label years ago, this is a huge improvement. Rich with hints of custard and clementine and satsuma after the long finish, very nice.
