Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Red cola cubes, sticky toffee pudding made with dates and blood orange rind lead with creamy vanilla and cacao in support. Plenty of dusty oak spice is present throughout.

Palate: Rich dark chocolate, vanilla pod sweetness and aromatic warmth from clove and cinnamon come through first, with lots of chewy rye notes and caramel in support.

Finish: Red fruit and rye spice linger.

Overall: A really wonderful rye from James E. Pepper.

James E. Pepper 3 Year Old - Oloroso Cask Finish (That Boutique-y Whisky Company) Reviews

Very sweet, very smooth, very nice……get some

An amazing drink. So much flavour. I just drink it neat, no ice.
Get it your taste buds will thank you every time you take a sip.
I’m not an expert with all the different tastes, notes etc. It’s quite sweet, probably the sweetest I have had. A taste of cognac in there and that fortified Australian wine if you have ever had any.

It’s a really nice smooth drink if your into that. Will be trying the other variant they do that’s got a different cask finish.

Undrinkable

Absolutely dreadful. The first time I’ve poured a drink down the drain. Undrinkable. Nasty metallic taste.
I like Rye’s, and this is a shocker.

Good but not brilliant

I wouldn’t call myself a very experienced rye drinker and I purchased this based on my liking of bourbons with rye in the mash. This rye is extremely sweet well when mixed with Diet Coke leaving you with a very sweet drink with a liquorice finish. The 50% strength is there but masked by the overall flavour. I’m not sure I would buy this again but who knows maybe my opinion will change with more rye’s tried.

Fantastic US offering

My first Rye Whisky and I was certainly blown away by how good it was! In the Glencairn glass you get a strong sticky toffee/Christmas pudding aroma. Taste wise it's got a hit of spice balanced with a hint of dark chocolate and something sweet.

A very pleasant woody and spicy aftertaste which leaves one both satisfied and looking forward to the next sip. I've tried it both neat and with a teaspoon of water and found with the water it really opens out the whisky and flavours within.

This was a 30ml sample, and I'll definitely be buying a full bottle now.
