Black & White Blended Whisky is a classic old blend of some of the finest whiskies in Scotland, with a high proportion of quality grain whisky. None other than Dean Martin was said to be particularly fond of Black & White. Creator James Buchanan apparently got the idea for the brand on his way home from a dog-show, and in the 1890s, The Scottie and Westie on the label were added, and became iconic symbols.

Nose

Some sour citrus, with sharp grain and biscuits, and a touch of peat.

Palate

Sugary dried fruit, young oak, vanilla, caramel and lemon.

Finish

Short, with a slight sweetness of honey.

I'm like 'Excellent Bargain,' I bought a Handle of Black & White. I even read about what casks were used (refill,) and the preferred mixer (soda.) It has a sharpness on the nose, if you sniff too hard, from the Grain Whisky. But that's accompanied by a nuttiness. That nuttiness flows right through to the palate, along with the sharpness. It's really nice, and goes well with lime, in a Highball. I just happen to like it on the rocks, too. Finish? It really ain't that kind of whiskey, but if you push me, I'll say 'medium.' This and J&B are the Rough Riders Team, for people who like uncompromising Scotches.

Excellent bargain

I'm drinking my first bottle right now as it just became available in my hometown in the U.S. Better than JW Red, and I can get a 1.75L at the same price point of a 750ml JW Black. I was most pleasantly surprised at the presence of smoke, especially in the finish. Great bargain and everyday blended Scotch.

My favorite

After a trip with My Scots cousins on a whiskey tasting tour I fell in love with Dalwhinnie. After hearing it went into the Black and White I decided to try it. Been in love ever since, smooth easy and easy on the pocket!

Nostalgia.

Back in the 1960's this was one of the few widely available good quality scotch blends available. It was imported by Fleischmann distillers who otherwise offered a very middle class mid priced line of US made liquors
