Darkness
Scotland
Let the Darkness! into your drinks cabinet/booze trolley/elaborate home bar/etc. This is an independently bottled 43 year old Invergordon single grain which has enjoyed a finishing period inside a specially-coopered, 50 litre oloroso sherry cask, bolstering all those yummy sherried notes to the max! (Do people still say "to the max!" or did that die with double denim?) Only 100 bottles were produced.
Aromas of rancio, oily walnuts and rosemary honey seep through dusty oak and wood polish. There’s a suggestion of toast dripping with butter.
Plenty of rich and nutty oloroso goodness, dried apricots, meaty dates and a little blackcurrant. The fruity opening is complemented by the gentle sweetness of spicy muscovado sugar and thick, black treacle. Cashew nuts keep oaky tannins company in the backdrop.
The dusty oak persists with help from tobacco leaves and juicy prunes.
Devilishly dark and brooding, somehow both understated and a powerhouse. Wow.
