Sourced from an undisclosed Islay distillery comes Scarabus, a single malt from Hunter Laing launched for Fèis Ìle 2019. Scarabus means ‘rocky place’ in Old Norse, named after a mystical area of Islay. The whole expression is quite mysterious, from the secretive distillery to the golden symbols adorning the bottle. A very handsome bottling housing delicious Islay whisky.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Classic notes of maritime peat smoke, sea spray and sea salt, with a subtle hint of vanilla and oak spice.

Palate

Oak char, old leather, stewed orchard fruit and vanilla sweetness returning among the smoky peat.

Finish

Lingering bonfire smoke, salted caramel and fresh berries.

Exceptional

This whisky is truly exceptional, however does not have same publicity as Lagavulin or other more prestigious whiskies from Isle of Islay. Its taste is exceptional with a very nice, woody, old leather palate with a very deep and rather significant distant caramel finish. For this price it is a bargain!

Don’t waste your money

Failed to deliver on any level other than pretty decent packaging. The whisky itself was like dishwater.

Great everyday Islay

Was a bit hesitant to buy it but it proved to be wright.This dram is reasonably priced which is an upside in these days of absurd malt prices (cf. the latest OB Lagavulin 12yo for example). In the nose nice whaft of peat smoke, still somewhat sublimed by the sweet oak notes.Very subdued note of honey fruits.In the mouth first attack is very subtle, very clean than the a bit of burn comes.It feels that this is a young malt, rather 5yo than 7-8. Finish is dominayed by the very classy interplay between sweet oak and refreshing juicy peat. If it was an older whisky I would give it full 4 stars.

No expert but I loved it!

Though no expert, I know what I like. I'm not impressed by big names, poetic descriptions, high prices or pretty bottles. I thought island malts were not really my thing. I was wrong, this was a delightful dram (actually I had seconds) - soft, full of smoke and sweetness. Loved it.
