Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Caramelised oak, woody cinnamon and honey-roasted ham, with a crack of rock salt all backed up by a wave of peat smoke.

Palate

Smoked nuts and barbecued meats, charred herbs and fresh fruit sweetness, with building chilli spice.

Finish

Charred chilli pepper and bonfire smoke.

Crisp with a moderate peat punch

Having read some of the other reviews, it is clear that this Whiskey (with the E) is not to everyone’s taste. It’s not an Islay Whisky! It’s a standalone Irish peated whiskey, with a crisp taste and a moderate peat punch. The flavour of the bourbon casks comes through, but the triple distilling gives it the warm mellow sweetness. I was given this bottle, but would be happy to buy a bottle at the competitive price it is selling at. It’s the kind of drink that I enjoy in front of the TV with the log fire blazing, or simply in conversation with friends and family. If you want an Islay peated whisky, Hinch is not for you. If you want an easy drinking everyday whiskey, then it’s worth a try. I’m for another, and perhaps a bottle of the 12 year single malt too!

For me it tasted very much like American Bourbon. It lacked the crisp "Irish" finish.

Peat, peat and more peat.

This is a good quality whiskey with most reviews here way off base. There is peat and more peat and some honey on the nose , then good flavour on the palate with the oaky maltiness apparent, followed by a medium to long finish. Is this a great whiskey? Not yet. Is it bad? Not a chance. It's like a baby Octomore with huge potential. The drink is hard in places, but worth the effort.

Lacking quality and maturity

Compared to a decent laphroaig or talisker this dram is pretty poor. It seems to me that it would benefit from longer maturing in perhaps Sherry or Madeira casks, which might take the edge off the rather coarse flavour. I kind of see what they are trying for with this, but it just hasn't worked.

Whisky? Not Worthy Of The Name

Poor poor quality whisky. Not peaty at all. Too young with very little flavour. Like a weak gin. This can't really be called a whisky to be honest. Hinch need to wait a while and try again. I won't waste anymore money on them until I hear that they are serious about making quality whisky rather than just a quick buck.
