Highland Park Valkyrie Bottling Note

Valkyrie is the first in Highland Park's Viking Legend series in partnership with Danish designer Jim Lyngvild who can trace his lineage back to Viking times. It's made with approximately 50% fully peated stock (Highland Park's peated floor malt is usually mixed with unpeated malt that's bought in at a ratio of 1:4 before mashing), but of course with Highland Park this means Orcadian peat and classic heather smoke notes.

This edition offers a smokier Highland Park experience, but the smoke is still balanced. Highland Park Valkyrie received a score of 99 Points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, making it an "Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation".

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Chocolate and some nutmeg off the bat before the smoke develops, balanced by dried apricot, plum and, increasingly, zesty orange too.

Palate: Plump dried fruits are complimented by vanilla, dried apple and waves of smoke and wood spice.

Finish: Liquorice and more fruit too, plus a return of some chocolatey notes.

Overall: More pronounced smoke than you’d find in a regular Highland Park, as you'd expected, but it never threatens to dominate proceedings – this is no chimney of a dram, far from it. The smoke is always balanced.

Highland Park Valkyrie Reviews

Stick with the standard issues

It’s drinkable, but not up to HPs normally high standards. Tastes very young (as another reviewer here noted) and just doesn’t have the depth, complexity, and refinement of usual HP. The peat has a rather sharp edge to it, and does not come across as particularly well balanced relative to the flavor of the rest of the malt. It’s okay, just not great. Of course the regular HP is so outstanding that with the bar set so high, this malt just suffers by comparison. Stick with the standard versions.

Thanks, Andrea!

Recommended to me, and since I’ve enjoyed other HP expressions, decided to give this a try.
A very complex nose - I got a sweet, dried fruit sensation with some apricot, green vegetables, and, of all things, dried beef!
The palate had bittersweet chocolate, nuts, vanilla and a lot of wood.
The finish was long, with wood and leather, and then the smoke hits you (very pleasantly!).
After a few drops of water, citrus fruit and vanilla become more pronounced, and even more wood. Again, the smoke gets to you later.
A very enjoyable dram indeed.

Heart of Highland Park peat

This is a young whisky with a slight metallic aroma on the bottom of the tongue. An alcoholic smell with it at first, but with a drop of water, the very particular Highland Park peat shows up. This is exactly what natural peat smells

I'm dancing on the table

I really enjoyed it, 4 stars cause of the priced based on Master Of Malt, 4,5 if it could be a little less pricey.

Another excellent from Highland Park

A bit aggressive at first, but with a few drops of water it really opens. Very nice after a few sips. Less smoky than Voyage Of Raven. I'd rather buy this one instead of Raven.

Tastes much younger than 12yo, yet costs twice as much

Based on a sample, not a winner. Tastes very young, compared to for example the 12yo or Dark Origins, and tries to fix that with a stronger peat note. The result is an oddly greasy whisky on the nose for a HP, with a flat body and lacking finish. Stick with the age stated ones. Speaking of Dark Origins, this feels like a baby version of it. I wasn't a big fan of DO, but rather a glass of that than a bottle of this.

HHHmmm yum

Has a lot in common with the 20yo Cadenhead bourbon cask released a while ago. All about the malt. Really good.

Excellent

An amazing whisky for the price, like Hubba Bubba with an added peatiness. My favourite whisky so far!

Same about the box

Really happy with the purchase. Bottle came very well packed. Same the box was crushed in to fit and is damaged.

Stick to the 12yo at half the price or Splash out on the 18yo

Quite underwhelmed with this, appears young but not priced for a young whisky, take my advice and spend your money on the HP 12 or splash out on the HP 18 but give this a miss.

Fruity Oriental.. She's Sweet n Spicy and a not too pricey!

Just finished my 3rd glass of this exceptional whiskey, I felt compelled to write a review!
This is a lovely drink, I taste vanilla & fruit, almost honey on the throat and what a kick, I love this whisky!
I'm closing my eyes as she trickles down, I get scorched pear with an amber oriental kung fu kick to the throat,... Fantastic !!. I cant wait for the next one. I'll just have to get through a few more bottles until then!!, Highland Park Bring it on!, I'm not sure how you could top this Beautiful Dram at this price!

Save up and buy the 18/21 year old

Mmm not sure about this one. To me the balance is all wrong and it is lacking the HP identity. It tastes quite young and maybe age is part of the problem. Yes the packaging is quite impressive but surely it is the whisky that matters most! I love Highland Park and regularly have a dram. I favour the 18 and 21 year old which I rate as some of the best in the world. Anyway I've a whole bottle to taste and chunter over with fellow whisky fans over the next year or so. Never know I might grow to like it!

A sensational dram

I was lucky enough to try this a couple of weeks ago. It does not disappoint. Well balanced and spicy sweet, with the Orkney peat taking front and centre on the lingering finish.
